Living with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a tremendous challenge, and understanding the disease is key to developing management strategies that will reduce discomfort. This comprehensive yet accessible book provides all the current information on the disorder's possible underlying causes as well as its symptoms, clinical features and effective treatments and therapies, including both complementary and non-drug therapies. The authors also recognise that, although there is no cure for IBS, there are many options to treat the symptoms. One of the most effective therapies is changing the person's diet, as the pain and discomfort usually worsen after eating certain foods. Specific dietary changes are imperative for those managing IBS, and this book provides a detailed nutritional plan, suggestions for implementing that plan and information on vitamin and mineral supplements. It also includes a list of foods that are known to aggravate IBS and a detailed list of food items that are regarded by experts as safe alternatives, also known as the Foodmap Diet. Comprehensive in its scope, the book features more than 100 delicious recipes (with accompanying nutritional analysis) that have been specially created to help manage IBS. The recipes cover virtually every meal, from breakfast and snacks to main meal options and entrees, including vegan and vegetarian selections.

5.0 out of 5 starsInvaluable Resource24 May 2011
By Rory Hornstein, RD - Published on Amazon.com

This book is an invaluable resource to those affected by IBS. The first part of the book contains essential information as to how to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet despite the problems associated with IBS. The reader will learn which foods can cause inflammation and bowel irritation, which foods can nourish and heal the bowel using a low FODMAP diet, which nutrient supplements are necessary, and what forms of these recommended supplements are best absorbed. The second part of the book contains over 100 kitchen-tested nutrient rich recipes that the entire family can enjoy. A 2-week sample low FODMAP meal plan is also included. As a Registered Dietitian with Crohn's disease, I continually keep abreast of new materials on IBD and IBS. Unfortunately, I have found some deleterious dietary misinformation about IBD/IBS on the market. In contrast, I was so impressed with "The Complete IBS Health and Diet Guide" that I use it as an example of an exceptional resource for other Registered Dietitians and/or clients when suggesting helpful guides to managing IBD/IBS through diet.

4.0 out of 5 starsFinally, research is emerging!3 Feb 2012
By S. Kocher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was diagnosed with IBS 15 years ago, but I was given zero resources to deal with it. My case has been extremely debilitating, and I have searched for years on information regarding how to deal with this. I am so glad that some real research is finally emerging on how to combat this syndrome. When I was first diagnosed, the only resource I found was "Eating For IBS" by Heather Van Vorous. It at first seemed helpful, but a lot of her information didn't make common nutritional sense, and it wasn't based on research. The information in that book is very outdated, especially since she recommends eating white bread. This book is clearly laid out, gives a comprehensive overview of the FODMAP concept and elimination program, and it offers tons of helpful tidbits in the margins. It also contains many recipes in the back. The chocolate chip oat muffins are delicious.
I gave this book four stars for two reasons. 1) I had to flip through a few different chapters to gain a total guide for what I could and couldn't eat. It would be helpful to find it all in one table. 2) As ongoing research reveals new guidelines, I think a few food recommendations are outdated. I believe for one to publish such emerging research, it would be great to have an online resource to keep readers up-to-date with the latest FODMAP changes. I have been using other online resources to complement the information in this book, but this is still the most comprehensive publication I have read.
From searching inside the IBS: Free At Last book, I believe this is a more comprehensive resource with a layout that is easier to follow.

2.0 out of 5 starsHoly cow the print on this book is horrible!10 Feb 2012

Ok, I'll admit I haven't read any of the book yet, but my god my copy looks like its hot off of a laser printer that's desperately blinking 'replace ink'. This book comes in a glossy cover, but the inside uses a horrible grey-scale color that makes that entire content rank among the worst paper grade and color of anything I've ever bought.
