Product Description

Review

Help your kids explore their imaginations with a well-built tree house. Schmidt (Decorating with Architectural Details) presents a well-organized guide to the basics of tree house building. Good photos and clear, detailed instructions lead readers through six designs. There is an informative section on what species of tree is best to "host" your structure as well as cautionary information on building codes and zoning. This is a solid book, but it lacks the flare and spirit of David and Jeanie Stiles's Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build. Still, Schmidt provides great instruction and a solid foundation. Recommended --Library Journal

Bought this for my husband who is making ME a treehouse (nearly 60yrs)
The pictures are really inspirational and the advice very practical.
He had his own ideas but some of the suggestions and tips made him modify his original plans to be safer and more imaginative. It helped him calculate the materials needed too.

I like the section on involving the children in the design or at least the person planning to use it most (ME)
The only negative was that some of the technical terms and the measuring quantities were Americanized, other than that its a useful book on a fun project!

This is a very good book, with nice colour pictures for ideas, but also has the breakdown of the drawings so you can follow them to make the treehouse. As sponsored by Black&Decker it obviously recommends what tools you need for the job.

As someone still in the creative dreaming phase rather than the sawing and nailing phase I have found this book great fun, and an inspiration for different ideas re the tree house we might build. On the basis of this book I have discounted some potential locations (trunk girth not substantial enough; wrong tree.... birch; might wash away next to river) and counted in some others. I also feel reassured that if I space any screws correctly I won't harm the tree.

Hopefully someone who has BUILT their tree house with this book as a guide will review it too to see how it shapes up in practice!

Exactly what I was looking for 20 Feb 2011

This was the exact type of information I was seeking out before starting on a treehouse for our kids. We needed to know a few key elements in building and planning. Since trees grow in all sorts of shapes, widths and sizes- I needed to know how to plan for the basics in safety and building as we build organically as we go along. This book had great tips and included plans for tree houses and where to start. I liked how it always kept safety aspects in mind because this was the biggest concern when we started discussing our treehouse.
