Indispensable...with reservations 2 May 2010
By R. Cook - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I passed on buying the original Rhino release of the boxed set, thinking to myself, "Will I really play this thing more than once?" and answering myself, "No." Later, I regretted my pointless thriftiness. When I saw this was available on iTunes, I bought it without hesitation. Let me say: this was a hardworking band who knew what they were doing and they did it exceedingly well. Each track is a gem, and the playing is disciplined and on point throughout. Put simply, these guys were a killer band and they killed with each version of these songs. That said, it does become wearing to listen take after take of the same song one after the other. The best way to enjoy THE COMPLETE FUNHOUSE SESSIONS is to play it in random shuffle mode in iTunes, so one does not have to listen to "Loose", for example, a dozen times in a row. Another thing one can do, although I haven't tried it yet, is to sequence together multiple versions of the album--taking alternative tracks of the album's 7 songs and putting together different takes of the album as a whole. Believe me, any version one would create in this manner would go neck and neck with the final version of the album as a powerful musical experience.

Unnumbered edition Back in Print 4 Feb. 2011
By OBIE - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Thanks to Rhino Handmade for finally rereleasing this great collection on CDs again.

It is an exact replica of the original box set, now speculativly priced, and the only thing it's missing is the limited edition number on the CD single cover.

This is not for everyone and even fans would have a hard time sitting through it in order. That being said, this is the Stooges playing live in a studio, without the audience. The best way to listen to this is on shuffle mode or maybe as 5 alternate versions of the original album.

I would also suggest combining the comments and false starts with the next full version of the track to get the full impact of the subtle differences between versions.

If you ever wondered what the Stooges sounded like live and tried those audience sourced bootlegs, this is the real deal and worth the investment.

Some Fun in a Studio House 28 Sept. 2008
By Best Of All - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a definitive example on how to let the music do the talking.

Limited to a release of 3000 copies, the 7-CD boxed set is the complete - and remastered - May 1970 sessions which produced the album that has elevated to classic stature. Clocking in at nearly eight hours, there are 142 tracks - 109 music, 33 studio dialogue - with 133 previously unreleased. If the wealth of material is not enough, there are a number of photographs and a mini-poster.

Before The Stooges imploded due to any number of issues, there was a band that seriously tackled its music and was clearing a path for what became the punk rock movement. This is a definitive audio "look" into those creative powers.

Also Avalible On iTunes 17 April 2009
By A. Woodley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
A lot has been said about this box set by other reviewers and all of it is true. It is a lot of the same songs over and over with little variation at times. I mean come on, you take one great album and make it into a seven CD box set and it will have some repetition. That being said if your a die hard Stooges fan than this really is a must have. If you're like me and you've tried to buy this numerous times and failed. I tried bidding on e-bay and was always out bid no matter how high I went. The prices on amazon are pretty steep as well. I did the next best thing possible and download the box set from itunes. There are some drawbacks, like you don't get any cases, artwork, or actual CDs. Those ancillaries are part of the draw to a box set like this and I get that but I really wanted to hear the music. I am still looking to get an actual box set but until than the downloads will due. It is also important to note that the downloads weren't cheap either. They ran around one hundred dollars or so. It's easy to feel buyer's remorse with a price tag like that but just sit back and enjoy the songs because The Stooges are worth it.

April 2013

I was looking through my old reviews, and I came across this one. I put up this review at a time when this box set was out of print and running upwards of $200 dollars. If given the choice between buying the physical box set and a download, do yourself a favor and but the physical box set. I have since purchased it, and it is a very well done box set. It may be for completest only, but it is awesome. Never has a band worked so hard to sound like it was falling apart. By far, the Stooges are my favorite band, so I may be a little biased. The sound quality on this set is great, the dialogue is interesting, and the chance to follow this great album's progress is well worth the time.

Worth every penny!!!!!!!!!!! 11 Feb. 2013
By Rimshot - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
First of all, there should be a rule about writing reviews on music you have never heard. The guy who gave this one star admits to never listening to it. Geez! C'mon!

I too regretted holding back on the original limited numbered edition and then spent ten years regretting it. However, when it was finally re-released, I pounced. I admit that 7 discs of out-takes sounds like a lot of listening to one 40 year old 40 minute record - even a superior one.

However, this is a revelation and there are very few week tracks in the set.

I stipulate that I LOVE Funhouse and I admit that it is my favorite Stooges release, but this still "turns it up to 11."

FTR - I also own Heavy Liquid, the box set homage to Raw Power. In my opinion Funhouse is much better. All the takes occurring in the studio ensure that the recording quality is great on every track. Funhouse is simpler than Raw Power, but in my opinion the mix and recording are far better. I love the songs on Raw Power, maybe even better, but the "sound" of Funhouse still kicks my ass. Which is why you need the 7 disc version. :)

The whole band just snap, crackles, and pops and is locked in tight on every track. If you "get" Funhouse, buy this and enjoy. If you don't own Funhouse, buy it, listen, and THEN buy this box.
