By Andre Lawrence TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
For the better part of 15 long years, I have been looking for a singular film industry book that I could use to help create a budget for a business plan. There are many, many books on the techniques of filmmaking, theatrical, animation and documentary filmmaking. (As a matter of fact, Focal Press produces, in my opinion, the best titles in the industry.)

There are also industry-related books on marketing and financing. But, with the exception of Attorney Mark Litwak's publications, there hasn't been a book that provides all of the necessities to actually breakdown a script to dollars and cents, nor is there a book that helps you to allocate resources for specific and specialized areas within the production. And, provide the forms necessary to contract out certain services. But, within the pages of this book, it is all here, including original copies of SAG forms.

This book, THE COMPLETE FILM PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, 4TH ED., is so much more than that. It is a 500+ page resource book/manual/insider info that is an expansive and an exhaustive handbook that has literally hundreds of various forms, outlines, releases and confidentially-agreement forms that are used in every major production in the United States.

Chapter Highlights:
+ Ch. 1. The Production Team and Who Does What.
+ Ch. 3. Basic Accounting
+ Ch. 4. From Script to Schedule
+ Ch. 5. Incentives (tax-related discounts)
+ Ch. 6. Pre-Production
+ Ch. 7. Insurance Requirements
+ Ch. 9. Building Strong Industry Relations/ Making Good Deals/ Navigating the Politics
+ Ch. 11. Unions and Guilds
+ Ch. 15. Clearances and Releases
+ Ch. 16. A Guide to Music Clearances
+ Ch. 18- Ch. 21 Locations/ Travel & Housing
+ Ch. 24. Television
+ Ch. 25- 26. Independent Filmmaking
+ Ch. 28 Commercial Production (Bidding on projects)
+ Ch. 29- 30. Wrap and Post Production
+ Ch. 32 Industry Survival Tips

THE COMPLETE FILM PRODUCTION HANDBOOK, 4TH ED, is an indispensable tool for anyone interested or working in the entertainment industry. This is a well-researched, well-written and fully documented publication. It is a repository of forms, rules and inspirational insights that is, in my humble opinion, undeniably essential. This book comes with my highest recommendation.

THIS IS A MUST-OWN BOOK. 5 gargantuan stars.

Eve Honthaner has been working and teaching in the film industry for many years. She has involved in some highly-acclaimed films including Titanic, Just Married, and Joy Ride. She summarizes her professional experience and in-depth research in "The Complete Film Production Handbook."

"The Complete Film Production Handbook" covers all the basics of film production and distribution, as well as the essential information of the film industry. It has 32 chapters and covers detailed information on film production team, office, and accounting, script, schedule, incentives, pre-production, insurance requirements, during the shoot, building strong industry relationships, deal making, navigating the politics, unions and guilds, principal talent, background talent, animals in films, clearance and release, music clearance, safety, locations, distant locations, foreign locations, travel and hosting, shipping, effects, specifically television, independent filmmaking, practical low-budget film making, new media, commercial production, wrap, post-production overview, greener filmmaking, and industry survival tips. It also has a very comprehensive glossary and index.

If you buy the book, you'll also get password to access the book's website to find editable versions of the forms from the book. This is a VERY important feature and will save you a lot of time.

Eve Honthaner covers the entire film industry in a book. "The Complete Film Production Handbook" has 546 pages (8 1/2 x11). It is VERY comprehensive. Highly recommended!

I can only guess that the other reviews were for the paper book. I've been using Kindle for a while now and have become accustomed to the limitations and advantages. I wanted the book straight away, without having to pay shipping and wait for several weeks.

Unfortunately, unless I have a corrupt copy or something, there appears to be no table of contents or index. This makes a book of this size completely unusable on Kindle, in my opinion. I have worked linearly through the first couple of chapters which are well written. I suspect that the content is every bit as good as indicated by the other reviews.

My advice is to buy the paper book and wait for a useable Kindle copy to be released.

This was very dissappointing.

Amazon, please get your act together and ensure that all books you release on Kindle have been properly reviewed and have all the essential controls embedded to make them easily navigable. If, for some reason, you decide to release a book with no navigation PLEASE make this clear to the prospective buyer or expect well written books to be given very poor reviews. I would like to exchange this book for a paper one and pay the difference. The Kindle version is of no use to me whatsoever.
