With ties to Germany, Norway, France, England, Florida and North Carolina, Frederick Delius is often hard to pin down as both a man and a composer--which is why some critics peg him as a Romantic, others as an Impressionist. While I am, admittedly, a Delius fan, I have never paid attention to his shorter songs until I came across this CD. Mark Stone does a fine job singing the songs which come from a variety of sources (I was surprised to see some Percy Shelley poems included here). Stephen Barlow does an excellent job accompanying Stone on the piano. With any effort to offer a complete songbook, some of the pieces are stronger than others and, to be candid, Delius is not quite at the level of say Ralph Vaughn Williams in producing songs. Still, fans of Delius are in the debt of Stone, Barlow and Stone Records for their valuable recordings. Highly recommended.
