CD Description

This set has now been repackaged in a DVD sized Ecolbook which is the width of a normal CD making the set more compact & easier to store. In the early 1960s, two giants of jazz went into the studios to collaborate on some of the most haunting, beautiful music ever. Miles was, by this time, a jazz star, a great trumpet player, composer and bandleader (his bands would be 'finishing schools' for future titans: John Coltrane, Bill Evans,Dave Holland). Gil Evans was a subtly superb composer and arranger, who wrote for the big band of Claude Thornhill and singers Johnny Mathis and Helen Merrill, as well as the small groups of Gerry Mulligan and Teddy Charles, and would go on to leading his own edgy, modern big band (he even recorded an album of Jimi Hendrix songs!).
This six-CD set, comprises, alternate takes & all, the Davis/Evans albums Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain, Quiet Nights, and Plus 19. This is some of Miles' most gorgeous playing in intricate, thoughtful, lush and majestic orchestral settings, with more than a few subtle classical shadings. It is elaborately annotated (it has CD-sized "miniatures" of original album covers) and a treasure forfans of Miles, Evans, orchestral jazz and heartfelt instrumental music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kind Of Wonderful 13 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is a magnificent box set. The production values in the booklet, the cover reproductions and the box are superb. The music is without exception wonderful. Davis with Evans were at an absolute peak on most of this music, even the much maligned Quiet Nights is more than listenable.
The only problem is one common to all box sets of this type, successive takes of the same piece of music can make for a less than terrific listening experience. This has been dealt with in large part by having the original disc followed by the outtakes and with programmable CD players you can avoid this if you wish.
The only way it could be improved, supply jewel cases with cover art for the 6 discs, this way you avoid possible problems removing discs from the LP reproduction covers. I keep my discs in jewel cases separate from the box and use the box and booklet for reference.
Despite these minor reservations this is a magnificent record of magnificent music and reasonably priced. Buy It!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a no brainer. 11 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
Come off it, whatever you say, six discs of Miles and Gil at the top of their game? For the price of a half decent coffee and 20 cigarettes? It's almost insulting. You'd have to be mad not to realise that this is an exquisite steal. 20th Century music never got any better than this, and it's unlikely that anyone will get even close to this in the 21st. On your way to that desert island, pack this baby, and you'll only need to agonise over 4 others; you won't listen to them anyway, as all you need is here. There's a complete universe in these sounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music. Great price. Awful Packaging. 9 May 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Without wanting to repeat what so many have said, I just want to quickly add to the other reviews that the packaging for this item is terrible. Very tasteful, very solid on the outside, but the disc trays are shocking. Many people familiar with DVD box sets will have seen great systems in use to overlap discs or otherwise make use of little space. This is NOT like any of them. Difficult to get discs in and out, potentially leading to scratches, bending of discs or even breaking discs if you're not the patient, careful type.

The music is amazing (I have 90% of it elsewhere, and the sound quality of this is just as good as single discs). The book is pretty good, obviously don't expect anything too detailed.

In short - Great value for money, ideal starting point for a newcomer to Miles (or a collector looking to get all the last bits and pieces), awful packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing but seminal, and yet everything 24 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
Anyone wanting to assert that jazz in the 21st century is little more than a beautiful corpse would do well to cite this set as an example of how colourful and vibrantly alive the form once was. They'd then be quite justified in putting a question as to what in the present day might compare with it, because there isn't much. Just why this is of course lies outside the scope of this review. Besides which such exercises in straightforward comparison are pretty pointless anyway, especially when this body of music speaks so eloquently for itself that it's essentially timeless.

For this reviewer, of the four albums plus every extra still available to us collected here 'Miles Ahead' is the cream of the cream. The master take of Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill's "My Ship" is jazz as fashioned by Claude Debussy, at least it would be if Gil Evans didn't have such a personal touch. But even that's only part of the story because the very selection of instruments -all those high reeds and woodwinds for example- makes for something else again. With Davis out front it's still not too much, but in the hands of more or less every well-known jazz trumpeter of the time it could have been, so great and deft was his handling of pathos.

'Porgy And Bess' is chronologically the second album of this collaboration. It's more of the same and more besides. Given Evans's extraordinary abilities to handle material it's not surprising to hear what he makes of this music. Even so "Bess You Is My Woman Now" is transformed from something ambivalent to something so alive with pastel shades that it almost takes on a visual dimension, especially as Davis, with that singular knack for choosing the right notes, falls right in with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value set 21 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a great value set - six excellent CDs and an excellent booklet. The only drawback is that it is very hard to get the CDs out of the packaging - I worry that they will break when I try to get them out. Edited addition to review: However, after about four days of experimentation I've finally found how out how the cd packaging works. You have to push down at the top edge of the disc in a direction parallel to the disc. This pushes it against the plastic springs at the bottom edge of the disc and releases the disc from the clips that hold it. Obviously I feel pretty stupid for not spotting this earlier, but just in case anyone else is struggling with the packaging...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sony packaging problems, again!! 13 Nov 2010
Format:Audio CD
The content of the music and the booklet are excellent. The 3 stars reflect the poor packaging. The cd'd are forced into a plastic case on top of eachother. There are 3 cd's each side, which mean to play the lower cd you must remove the others. Is it too much to ask for individual sleeves? My cd's were warped by forcing them in a packaging which is clearly unsuitable. Come on Sony, after the clue fiasco on the 'complete' release, please give us something practical.
