It's great to see a UK-focused Big Book of Vegan Cookery on the scene at last. Tony and Yvonne Bishop Weston have been on the UK vegan scene for years and this new book is testament to their knowledge, experience and imagination. It's kind of a vegan Good Housekeeping or Delia - it covers all the bases. The recipes are great and range from simple to special (not surprising given Tony's vast culinary experience); feed them to your non-vegan friends and don't tell them until after they've wiped the last crumbs from their plates... a great way to dispel the 'worthy but tasteless' vegan stereotype. The book also gives important and well-explained information on the history of veganism and the ethics behind this dieatary choice - the animals, saving the planet, feeding the world and our own health, including sensible and practical advice on vegan pregnancy and raising children. All the nutritional sections are well-researched (Yvonne is an experienced nutritionist) accessible and reassuring and blow away those urban myths. The information on how to extend your ethical footprint beyond food - eg cosmetics, shoes and so forth - is also well done.
If you are new to vegetarianism and veganism, this would be a great place to start - it will give you vital information that is easy to understand as well as teaching you to cook some gorgeous food. And even if you're an old hand, the recipes are still cool. I made crumpets for the first time - so easy, even for the yeast-phobic like myself!
