Product Description

The Science of Shiatsu
In this compact, exhaustive, scientifically oriented text and guidebook, Toru Namikoshi for once and all discredits erroneous interpretations that confuse shiatsu therapy with traditional Japanese amma massage or categorize it as limited within the framework of ancient oriental medical thought and unrelated to modern medical science. By proving that shiatsu rests firmly on a medical scientific basis and on thorough physiological and somatological understanding, he sets it completely apart from the many superficial health regimens currently popular in many parts of the world.
Shiatsu occupies a point between the mysticism of acupuncture and moxa-combustion therapies, with their reliance on the theory of vital points (tsubo), and the excessive mechanization of Western medical science. In other words, shiatsu concentrates on the human element of cure and strives to evoke the self-healing powers inherent in the human body.
Though, in giving the reader the basic physiological knowledge required to stimulate and maintain precious good health, he must resort to some specialized explanations, Namikoshi presents his material so skillfully and sets forth the techniques of shiatsu therapy so clearly that his book is invaluable, not only to medical scientists, but to the layman in search of better physical condition as well.
The author sincerely hopes that more people will find relief from stress, cures for the many inexplicable minor ailments that plague us today, and total health the natural shiatsu way without resorting to devices and medicines whose long-range effects are sometimes uncertain.

I bought this book after reading the previous review and I have to be honest this book is fantastic. Having just started a diploma in Zen Shiatsu this book not only offers clear photos illustrating the practioners body & hand position during the routine, it provides hand drawn illustrations indicating shiatsu point locations along muscles etc. This book is easy to read and understand and does a great job teaching you about anatomy and physiology. What is doesn't cover however is hara diagnosis and Kyo/Jitsu symptoms etc, instead it has a great section on treating specific pathological conditions diagrams and all. I would recommend this for all beginners in addition to S. Masunaga's 'Zen Shiatsu' & Chris jarmey's 'Complete Guide to Shiatsu'.

Take it from someone who knows; this book is exactly what any would-be practitioner of Shiatsu and accupressure needs. If your just starting out, or if you've taken years of classes on the matter as I have, Mr. Namikoshi will show you step-by-step exactly what points to hit, in what order for maximum effectiveness, and using what positioning of the body as well as the hands and fingers you are applying with. No homeopathic practitioner should be without this book; I only wish I had more stars to work with. I must emphasize that I am not acting on Mr. Namikoshi's behalf, nor do hope to see anything except more people writing reviews such as this one other than myself, for that will mean that more people have gone out and found a copy themselves. Buy this book.

A reference manual for Shiatsu practitionner 22 Feb 2005

You want to learn the right techniques to practice shiatsu? Then, get this book. It is the best reference you could get. "The complete book of shiatsu therapy" is a practical guide that shows you the points to press during a routine treatment or for a particular ailment or disorder, it shows you the points location and their anatomical correspondance.

You may like or dislike the fact that this book does not reflect the eastern medical phylosophy (what meridian is he working on now?), as opposed to "Zen Shiatsu". It offers you an excellent basis to become a great shiatsu "technician".

Learning Shiatsu is like learning a martial art, you learn the techniques, master them and then search for more knowledge and keep improving...
