Biography

It’s 1973 in South London. Teenage friends Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook form the band that will see them dubbed ‘The New Lennon and McCartney’. Over 35 years later, with their legacy intact and as vital as it has ever been, Squeeze are still touring and reminding fans worldwide just why they have left such an indelible impression on the UK’s music scene.

Product Description

Product Description

There aren't many bands that have weathered as well as Squeeze. They've notched up 17 studio albums and more than 20 hit singles and were on the road for 25 years, retired and then reformed last year to do it all again. This double CD features the complete BBC sessions. Seventeen years of BBC studio recordings have thrown up some classic moments; acoustic versions of some of their biggest hits and live to air recordings, giggles and all.

3.0 out of 5 stars SQUEEZE AT THE BBC - SHAKEN NOT STIRRED 14 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
These BBC sessions take us from the late 70's punk clatter of the splendidly silly 'Bang Bang' and the sublime 'Take Me I'm Yours' to the gorgeous 'Some Fantastic Place' (Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook's favourite Squeeze song) in 1994.
Over the course of 2 cd's we are treated to spirited versions of most of the bands big hits, misses and prime album tracks (strangely though no 'Cool For Cats'). It is obvious that Squeeze were a fine live proposition with the musical chops to go with the often sublime songwriting. However there's nothing on here that betters the studio versions and, while the three 'Tempteds' varily wildly in style, no one but true completists will be overly interested (no matter how hard Glenn Tilbrook tries this song will always belong to the hugely underated Paul Carrack).
Fans will lap this up but casual admirers would be better sticking with The Big Squeeze (still the bands most comprehensive hits collection) or the excellent studio albums Eastside Story and Some Fantastic Place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Far better than the average shelf-filler 9 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
We've been without Squeeze now (I'm writing this in early 2009 and while the group recently reformed, they haven't yet produced anything 'new'...) for about ten years, and my occasional glances at the 'Sq' sections of record stores I go to had always shown me nothing more than what I already have: re-hashed Greatest Hits compilations.

After "Singles: 45s and Under" came "Greatest Hits"; after this came "Big Squeeze"; more recently we've had "Essential Squeeze". In between these we were given "Excess Moderation". What they all had in common was disappointing - brilliant music, but most fans had much of it already, and in many ways these retrospectives were simply tossing about the same songs in different packages (to one extent or another).

Then came "The Complete BBC Sessions", and what a find it was! Sure, they're the old songs, and sure, they're live versions, but this is neither 'yet another retrospective Greatest Hits compilation' nor a typical live album. Squeeze's BBC sessions were professionally recorded, with good sound quality, and produced, sometimes, eccentric versions of the original masterpieces, with Difford and Tilbrook's character and humour occasionally shining brightly in the act of playing them.

What's also interesting about the choice of songs played, is that they were the band's (or the singer-songwriter duo's) choices at the time. They give us a little snapshot of the Zeitgeist of the band, of what they were doing, if you like, at particular moments.

4.0 out of 5 stars a history lesson 27 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Sessions spanning 1977 - 1994 include some well known and loved classics along with more obscure Squeeze tracks. Different versions and arrangements add a new dimension to some songs (such as Melody Motel - much more like the demo than the one on Frank, Tempted - three times (like Jesus in the wilderness?) and a weird rendition of "I must go") and make it a must for any self respecting fan. Plus, what great value for 29 tracks!

I have heard a few other BBC Session albums for other groups/artists and I'm yet be left feeling disappointed. This is no exception. This double CD includes live performances in the BBC studios ranging from 1977 to 1994. Some of these recordings are stripped down acoustic versions of some of the band's biggest hits (such as "Take Me I'm Yours", "Up The Junction", "Tempted" and "Labelled With Love"), while others are full on live versions with the entire band. Many Squeeze fans will know how good they are live and the CD captures this magic in an intimate live session environment. The first CD are the earlier recordings and most of songs are less familiar than those found on Disc 2. There are 3 versions of "Tempted" to enjoy, all on the same disc and two of the versions sandwiches just the one song! Nevertheless the album is a real joy to listen to and the recordings very well produced for live performances. If you own an earlier Squeeze 'Greatest Hits' album and are looking at possibly purchasing one of the later releases, don't bother because they are all pretty much the same. Instead get this, as you can enjoy a different take on many of these great songs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Live Representation 4 Jan 2009
By Pat Lamorgese - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a good live representation of one of the top pop acts to come out of England. Every note is exact as the original studio release, but I still feel that their best live album is "A Round and A Bout". Still, true fans will love this, and need it in their collection, as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Other" Angry Young Man does it again 17 April 2009
By S. Sorrentino - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I saw Joe Jackson in NYC when he first came out (no - not from the closet) and these tunes from the BBC are great examples of his showmanship. Great sund and decent selection of songs - I recommend it.
