Product Description

This guide to keeping fishes shows how to recreate aquatic environments from continents and oceans around the world. It shows how to design a range of environments and then fill it with suitable species of plants and fishes. The information is systematically arranged into self-contained guides. Step-by-step photographs show how to set up each tank, with information on the correct type of substrate, water, lighting, temperature, landscaping, plants and waterflow for the environment. There is also a guide to the fishes that are suitable for each tank, with information on their general care. A reference section covers nutrition and successful breeding, tank and water management, and treating ailments and disorders.

I have set up many Aquariums with out the guide of manuals and knowledge of what I was doing. But this book taught me the basics of aquarium preparation, and gave me an understanding of the miniature ecosystem I was creating and maintaining. I also did not understand the characteristics of the fish I was housing. I found that many were being attacked or dying form unknown causes. With the help of this book I am now able to colonise the aquarium with fish that will not fight and identify early signs of disease in the aquarium. With the aid of this book I was able to breed my first set of Kribensis, mollies and catfish, despite how difficult it can be. The many landscapes you can make from this book range form the fresh water plains of Amazon, to the salt-water habitat of a Hawaiian corral reef. The layout of this book is exceptional, the content is layed out in depth, the instructions are easy to follow and to the point. By reading this book you are able to set up a fully functional aquarium, introduce and breed fish successfully and keep them healthy. This book is a must for every beginner or someone who is looking for really good ideas.

A helpful resource 19 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be a very helpful resource when I was setting up my aquarium. While it is not the most comprehensive guide ever written on fishkeeping, it is at it's most useful in it's step-by-step guides to establishing different styles of aquaria. It helps you choose suitable fish for differnet set-ups, and what are good companion species. If you feel you need this kind of advice then this is money well spent.

Interesting concept for an aquarium book - a few pages each on a number of different aquariums. Filter types, sand/rock/wood, plants , water and fish species. Plus some more general information at the beginning and the end. Including some comments on algae I might add.

It appears from some of the pictures that the aquariums had been allowed to mature, and were not just put together for an afternoon for the sake of a photograph or two.

A book to thumb through and be inspired by.

I've given the book an extra star because of the pleasantly low price.
