I read this book when I was young and I read it occasionally when I'm feeling blue. If you don't know Curious George, he's a monkey who is always wondering about things. He gets into little messes here and there, but it always turns out okay. Sounds simple? It is, but it's a lovely book that you can laugh at and remember how interesting the simple things in life are.

My 3 year old son was sent this book as a Christmas present and six weeks later we are still reading it every night before bed time. Admittedly, I sometimes wish he would choose a shorter story for bed time, but he just loves it. My 18 month old daughter also chooses it every night, and loves pointing at Curious George every time he appears on the page. George is so funny, the story line so interesting, you never know what is going to happen next. And the drawings are fantastic. I never knew a monkey could have so many facial expressions! We would not be without George.

If, like me, you grew up with Curious George these stories will be a trip down memory lane. If not, it's a chance to catch up on something you really missed out on. The stories are timeless.

This book contains the following 7 original Margaret and H. A. Rey stories:
Curious George
Curious George Takes a Job
Curious George Rides a Bike
Curious George Gets a Medal
Curious George Flies a Kite
Curious George Learns the Alphabet
Curious George Goes to the Hospital

These are the original stories and illustrations dating back from 1941 -1966 so I have read some criticisms of some of the illustrations, especially the ones in which the man with the yellow hat smokes a pipe. There have also been calls for a new revised and perfectly politically correct version. George does all sorts of things a child shouldn't, from calling the fire department, to climbing on electric wires, and of course going away with strange man in yellow hat. So I suppose the book isn't for everyone, but I quite like it the way it is, without revisions for complete political correctness, and becoming completely boring as well. If your child is intelligent enough to know that he or she is not really a monkey, I see no problems.

Curious George is the original bad boy of children's literature. Edited by the legendary editor and publisher , Ursula Nordstrom. Unlike most children's literature of the time, Curious George did not attempt to teach children to be good. It revelled in naughtiness Curious George acts very much like a naturally inquisitive child and chaos often ensues.

These stories are uplifting, educational, and some of the finest ever written for children. In a world that is seemingly against his naive curiousity, George is always able to not only make everything right and please those that he has inadvertently foiled, but he does so by just going his own way and not even trying to. Complete with great moral undertones about exploring the world and being a better person.

It's a classic. I read the individual stories as a child and they are still wonderful. Be warned, however, children will want to read it over and over, but since the book is very heavy, the binding will split fairly quickly.

My English wife had never heard of Curious George and, when she beheld this volume, thought that it may be a bit too old-fashioned in its illustrations and a bit too involved for our 22-month-old to comprehend.

Subsequent usage has proven her wrong. Whilst our toddler has the attention span of a gnat, yes, we are only able to get through a few pages of narrative at a time, but this is her absolute favourite book to look at, and the first thing she picks up if you ask her if she wants to read. And once you've gone through all the stories, it's possible to take her through an abridged version using the illustrations if your vocal cords are tired. And she will sit quietly on the sofa, just thumbing through the book and looking at the pictures for 15 - 20 minutes at a time (which is a testament to the effectiveness of the illustrations and not my daughter's budding genius!). And we return to this book several times a day. We've had it for a couple of months and she still doesn't tire of it.

The only one of the books that she doesn't sit still for at all is the alphabet book, but I'm sure that will come in time. Speaking of which, it seems that the words used to illustrate the alphabet book were chosen because of their phonetic value; I suspect this may be because the thoughtful Reys were not native English speakers (but spoke and wrote in several languages) and understood one of the best ways to learn language. Top marks there.

The storytelling through simplistic acts is ingenius. Curious George is the metaphore of childhood. The Man in the Yellow Hat is the adult who is always there for advice and then steps back and watches his child make their own decisions. A Legendary charecter, author, and a prized timepiece. EXCELLENT!
