Review

Clark handles sometimes painfully raw scenes with great sensitivity...a tour de force (Booklist)

A ticking time bomb of a thriller...The twisty plot and dynamic duo make for a suspenseful, if sobering, page-turner (Publishers Weekly)

Marcia Clark has upped the ante yet again... Pulse-pounding, poignant, and provocative, this is a story that will engage your heart and your mind (Examiner)

Thrilling (Closer)

When it comes to Californian crime, Ms Clark knows her onions (Grazia)

It's no big surprise that Marcia Clark knows her way around a courtroom, and a murder mystery - but she's also a terrific writer and storyteller (James Patterson)

This is the 2nd book I have read of Los Angeles District Attorney (Special Trials prosecutor) Rachel Knight and LAPD detective Bailey Keller. This story comes alive as it is written about school shooting which is very much in our real news stories today.

It is a long book and every time the two gals thinks they have a handle on “who done it”, something changes and they find out they are still looking for the real mastermind. It begins with a shooting during an assembly in a high school. They are immediately on the job trying to stop this murdering before it can happen again. The author describes the interviewing process, the long days and nights the police detectives and attorneys put in to figure out where the killers are.

The story also contains a bit of the life other than the killings such as who is dating who and what they like to drink when they do get a chance to unwind. I do love the fact that Rachel is not a morning person (I can so relate!) and that she permanently lives in a hotel.

I did figure out who was the mastermind about a chapter or two before the story actually said it. If you are a mystery/police procedural reader, I would recommend you get a copy of this book. Be prepared to have late night reading sessions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating 17 Sep 2014

This is a very strong story. I know this is fiction but it brought back to me the times I've heard on the News of shootings in schools.

This opens up almost immediantley with the shooting. The young teacher throwing her arms as wide as she can to protect the youngsters. The girl hidden under the table whose head gets shot at close range. At times this author had me wriggling in my seat. I don't usually read discriptive words as plainly told as this, so much so I could see it in my minds eye and felt physically sick.
I don't read blood and gore, but this story had to have the details to bring it home.

The puzzles of crime solving were coming together nicely and fitting where they should go to make a picture and lead up to the killer/killers. But there were pieces that fitted but they were all so wrong so, just as you thought you were travelling along with the Detectives it all changed.

I loved the unpredictability of this. Kept me engrossed. I just had to read some of the shootings with one eye closed!

I would like to thank Mulholland Books for allowing me to read and review this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars great action packed police mystery/thriller 14 Nov 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Read large size paperback from library. Love this author. Another great story with loads happening from the get go. Loads of twists and turns. I did guess the really bad baddie right from when he 1st entered the story. Also the ending, unfortunately I guessed the target (but not how it would go down) as to me very obvious. It didnt detract from the story. There was an awful lot of psychological talk for me. Could have been pared down. Still, an excellent story.
