"The Compassionate Animal" is an interesting, informative book that reviews many aspects associated with compassion. After all, why be compassionate? It is not obvious that this is a quality that would make us succeed on the evolutionary ladder! Gardner attempts both a scientific and spiritual review of the origins of compassion in constructing her argument that the time has come for us to extend the "circle of compassion" to include other animals, thereby reducing our dependency on them for food and other needs.

The book is well written and easy to read, despite the complex nature of the argument and I would say that it will be of great interest to anyone who has an interest in developing their spirituality, rather than just animal lovers per se. In fact, the title and cover image are perhaps misleading - the "animal" referred to in the title is no other than man himself: much of the book concentrates on man, rather than discussing other animals.

If I have a slight criticism, it is that perhaps an extra chapter is needed at the end to draw together the different strands of the argument into a coherent conclusion.

Nevertheless, a very worthy and enjoyable book.

The Compassionate Animal is a very inspiring and absorbing book. It is also unusual in being well-researched and informative - but also a very good read. Mrs Gardner takes the reader on a fascinating historical journey and a wide survey of contemporary disciplines which are rarely brought together. Her light and accessible style make easy work of some fascinating insights and original creative thought.

I thoroughly recommend this book to all who have an interest in nature, animal welfare, the environment, spirituality and the future of mankind, the planet and our fellow creatures. It is a book which should be required reading in schools - and also on the non-fiction best-sellers list and on everyone's bedside table, as an uplifting and heart-warming read.

I have been interested in animal welfare for a long time and have also been interested in what makes people of different religions and cultures tick....it is my belief that if religions explored their many similarities more, rather than focusing on the differences, the world would be a more compassionate, less troubled place. To read Barbara's historical, detailed and well researched observations on some of the key principles around compassion to animals in different religions therefore provided a fascinating insight. To me, books should provoke thought and this one certainly does. Thanks Barbara.

Living non-violently and coming into right relationship with our non-human kin is the only way forward - for their well-being and survival, for ours, and for the future of our shared home, this much beleaguered planet.

Barbara Gardner's book is an authoritative and easy to read guide back to our sanity and humanity. If you enjoyed Karen Armstrong's The Great Transformation, you'll enjoy this.

'The Compassionate Animal' makes an ideal companion to Jon Wynne-Tyson's important book - 'The Extended Circle'.
It is widely informative and inspires our empathy with all the other animals with whom we share this existence.
