Book Description

31 Oct 1997
A pair of mute swans struggle against the odds to sustain their life on a wild patch of loch. Then the hen starts to lose her eggs to predators. She builds her nest and lays her eggs, only to lose them, again and again, days before hatching. Jim Crumley is the author of "The Road and the Miles".

5.0 out of 5 stars Swans 6 Sep 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Crumley's story of the three swans in Scotland will appeal to those with an interest in animals or Scotland. It is a thoughtful and moving story which really isn't about birds or Scotland, although I learned details about swans and Scotland I never knew. It is a short book and takes about 30 minutes to read but you will remember it as long as any book with a 1000 pages. A good gift for a friend or yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swans 11 April 2012

A small, well written observation about a man who protects the souls of swans. The world would be a far different place if we all cared about it like JC does. You'll be glad you read this book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful company 3 April 2013
By Tetleylee - Published on Amazon.com
This slim book is one of the most quietly beautiful reads I have ever experienced. Part natural history observation of the swans of his local loch, part fable to the mystery and soul of these graceful creatures, Crumley's little book makes you feel like you are there beside him amongst the reeds and flooded waters of this lonely outpost. His recounting of the bond he formed with the abandoned pen and her subsequent death is haunting and will stay with me for a long time. A wonderful legacy of love for the natural world and a reminder of the importance to care for and consider all creatures other than ourselves.
