The only difficulty with any XTC compilation is that, undoubtedly, the target audience already own the music. Unlike your average band, XTC have managed to accumulate a bizarre following of cult drones, with white labels and off cuts hoarded and boasted about like Gollum and his ring. Lets be honest: XTC were diverse, intelligent and influential but, inbetween their minor chart successes, whilst penning some amazing songs they also churned out a vast amount of garbage. I know, a thousand die-hard afficionado's are screaming "blasphemer" at me - I ought to know, I am one! So it's nice to see an album with the more familiar and tuneful songs on it. This compilation was a gift, although I admit I would have bought it because it is XTC: I have every single and other albums so I'd have to, really. But I can listen to the greats like Making Plans and Senses, have a laugh at Sergeant Rock and enjoy All You Pretty Girls without having the dross of the Homo Safari series or the bloody awful Respectable Street. If you're an XTC fan, buy it for your collection, car or background noise and admit to yourself that you don't need it but want it anyway. But if you're new, then it really is a great buy to introduce you to a band that is, in all probability, one of the most cited "influential" bands I've ever heard of. No, with age I've realised that they're not the be all and end all of music... but they're pretty damn close. Enjoy! (But don't be misled into spending 20 years tracking down every single 7" and LP like I did).

In the late 70s XTC stood out from the crowd with their pop sensitivities and eccentric keyboard noise the first two albums White Music and GO 2 are excellent and along with a healthy batch of excellent non album singles XTC were ready to take over the world. This collection kicks off with the previously rare Science Friction, quirky choppy guitars a foretaste of the debut album. Then the piece de resistance Staute Of Liberty a great song; only Andy Partridge could pen a love song to such a symbol of Americanism and make it sound twisted yet sensitive. This Is Pop follows, once described by Sting as the best pop song ever! The next two tracks almost match it; the twee nostalgia of Life Begins At The Hop works so well, whilst Are You Receiving Me? is a song in the classic vein of early XTC buzzsaw guitar work warped lyrics and maniacal delivery - simply awesome. After that it falls off a little (in my opinion) through the successful 80s singles starting with Making Plans For Nigel (the only song many people will remember them for!)and the Black Sea singles including the ridiculous Sgt Rock. However you can't keep good men down and Moulding and Partridge bounce back with Senses Working Overtime and continue on to the beautiful and lilting Love On A Farmboys Wages. I could rave about early XTC for hours but if you don't know much XTC this is an excelllent starting point and hopefullly those who buy it will be tempted to go back and discover the first three albums in all their glory.
Distinctly English, at times off the wall but always highly enjoyable (Sgt. Rock aside)
