Product Description

Book Description

The Communist Manifesto, originally published in German in 1848, became the rallying cry for revolutionary movements throughout Europe and indeed around the world well into the twentieth-century.

In this new Broadview translation, L.M. Findlay draws on the textual and historical scholarship of recent generations, on the 1888 translation by Samual Moore and supervised by Engels - the standard English version in Marxist discourse - and on the original Helen Macfarlane translation into English of 1850.

The long introduction sets this work of textual scholarship in context, and more centrally sets the Manifesto itself in the context of its time, and of its influence on modern history. Findlay also touches on the Manifesto's relevance in a current world concerned about globalization and world inequality. Throughout, Findlay draws on many academic disciplines and maintains a broad-ranging perspective. The appendices include a draft version, correspondence and journalism of Marx and Engels, ten illustrations, and eight influential political manifestos.

A concept born in a simpler time used as an excuse for many things from Socialism to controlled capitalism. As with any pivotal work one should read it for his/her self. There is always the chance of misinterpretation by an individual, but if you do not read this then you are just accepting someone's word anyway.
This is more than an economics book it is a way of life. It sounds good on paper but makes a lot of assumptions. Instead of worrying about workability, look at the logic that is built on assumptions of that time (written, in 1848). Add this to your library.

You can pick a side (pro or con) and make a stand if you like; but look at the size of this book and realize that many people will just use the title and build their own case. You will have read the real thing. And be sure to balance it with. "The Capitalist Manifesto" by Louis O. Kelso

A gifted contribution in the field of textual and historical scholarship 11 Aug 2005
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This influential cornerstone document of 19th and 20th century communist movements worldwide was originally published in 1848, this new edition of the works of Karl Marx and Friedreich Engels is professionally edited by L.M. Findlay and will provide academic libraries, scholars, and students with basic source materials for their studies of a movement that was the chief opposition to the capitalism of the west, and which still lingers on in North Korea, Cuba, and in an increasingly evolving form within mainland China. This new translation is a gifted contribution in the field of textual and historical scholarship and should be a part of every college and university Political Science reference collection.
