Book Description

28 Dec 2004
The dollar is in trouble. It has fallen against other currencies for the past three years, and now its orderly retreat could well become a rout. This spells potential disaster for the American economy—and potential riches for a few smart investors. In The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How to Profit from It, financial gurus James Turk and John Rubino show how the dollar arrived at this precipice, why it will plunge, and how you can profit from the resulting financial crisis.

The U.S. today is the world’s biggest debtor nation, printing money with abandon to sustain the illusion of prosperity. The federal government owes $7 trillion and its debt is soaring. As a society, we owe more than $37 trillion, or about $500,000 per family of four. Our trade deficit with other countries is staggering, and to finance this mountain of debt we’re flooding the world with dollars. The inevitable result: The dollar will decline until it is displaced as the world’s dominant currency. Precious metals will soar in value, and gold will reclaim its monetary role at the center of the global financial system.

Traditionally a haven during times of uncertainty, gold has risen dramatically since 2001. By the fall of 2004 it was up by nearly 50%, at over $400 an ounce. But this is just the beginning.

James Turk, a leading gold authority and the founder of GoldMoney.com, and veteran financial writer John Rubino, show readers how to capitalize on gold’s dramatic climb. In The Coming Collapse of the Dollar, Turk and Rubino reveal which stocks and bonds will falter as the dollar declines and why that decline is virtually inevitable. They offer strategies for using gold coins, gold stocks, gold-based digital currencies, and other hard assets to create a profitable portfolio. And they explain how to make the most of your gold and other precious metal holdings, identifying the opportunities and pitfalls of buying gold mining stocks and the mutual funds that invest in them.

America’s debt binge has put its economy at grave risk. The value of the dollar is falling; many stocks are once again wildly overvalued; and bonds, tied to an ever-diminishing dollar, are a disaster waiting to happen. By investing in gold and other hard assets, Turk and Rubino explain how you can protect yourself from these dangers.

The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How to Profit from It is a must read for every investor, whatever the size of his or her portfolio.

Mr. Turk & Mr. Rubino do an excellent job of introducing the unitiated to the ills of the present financial system that pervades our world, in particular as it relates to paper("fiat") money and expressly the US Dollar.

You will learn the background of how we all became users of purely paper or fiat money due the end of the gold standard; how that money is NOT backed by a real asset like gold and how it is created out of thin air by central bankers!

The problems this then causes, ie printing money inflates our economies and thus causes prices to rise are discussed! It is NOT the prices rising themselves that is inflation it is the expansion of the money supply! Following are easily understood explanations of the debt situation of the US and the view of the future collapse of that currency and how that will have a knock on effect to all the other fiat currencies, yes! the pound too and the euro etc etc!!!

The authors then offer up solutions to this coming collapse. This is where I had to reduce the star rating!
Whilst I agree whole heartedly that gold is and will be the only real money and we will probably have to return to a gold standard to cure the ills of the financial system, I agree people should be buying and storing gold coins/bars to preserve their wealth BUT I cannot agree that gold ETF's and Digital Gold(where you have access to using your personal gold holdings stored in a vault by using the internet as an electronic payment vehicle) are a good idea.

Now maybe I'm conservative but if this worldwide financial collapse is as bad as some of these well repected economists and investment analysts say, governments could do just about anything to get their mits on your gold! It's been done before!! In 1933 in the US the public's personal gold was confiscated by the government and don't think it can't happen again or in the UK. IT CAN!!! Therefore I do not want my gold in a safe deposit box or a vault where government can get at it, end of story!!!

Buying gold mining company shares may be ok but I'm betting stock markets are going to crash big time and we will go into a lengthy depression so their shares will be taken down too, so I can't endorse the authors ideas there either.

Using things like put options: well maybe but it's still paper currency based and even if you cash in on that investment you will still be left holding worthless paper dollars, euros, pounds and by then you won't be able to get your hands on gold, it will be too late!!

IMHO the only safe(ok I admit conservative too!) solution is to buy and hold gold coins(or maybe bars too) and possibly silver too. This should be done safely and securely away from banks and governments prying eyes, ie put it in your own safe or bury/hide it!!

If you want further reading just about the coming dollar collapse, then go for Richard Duncan's excellent "The Dollar Crisis" in paperback as it has been revised and updated. A word of warning, think carefully about his suggested solutions though!!!

Two excellent books on the history of the Gold Standard and Fiat Money etc are:-
Murray N. Rothbard's "What Has Government Done to our Money & The Case for a 100% Gold Dollar" and Ferdinand Lips' "Gold Wars".

That should keep you busy for a while! Good Luck and think seriously about why you should be buying gold! Paper/Fiat currencies HAVE ALWAYS FAILED AND WILL DO SO AGAIN!! Read these books and you will know why this is the truth!

3.0 out of 5 stars Dire, direct warnings about the dollar 12 July 2006
By Rolf Dobelli TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
This frightening book offers an interesting set of strategies to profit from what the authors see as the imminent collapse of the American currency (and, presumably, economy). It must be said that authors James Turk and John Rubino do not quite succeed in making the case that the economic catastrophe they foresee will happen. For example, they indicate that the value of the U.S. dollar will collapse against other currencies, but then they indicate that these other major currencies will also collapse, leading one to wonder what is collapsing with respect to what. Essentially, they seem to be predicting global hyperinflation, with price levels rising in every country. This scary prospect seems to demand somewhat stronger evidence than provided. However, we regard the authors' arguments as well worth reading, if only because hyperinflation has occurred in the past and so it is prudent to consider the possibility that it may happen in the future. The authors do a reasonably good job of explaining the various ways an investor might hedge against a dollar collapse by owning gold, precious metals and gold stocks. Turk, who has a Web site that works with a digital gold payment system, is straightforward about having a potential conflict of interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable and Factual 1 Nov 2007
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. The authors stick to the facts and present some disturbing conclusions about the state of the world economy and how Gold has always stood in the background as the world's reserve currency.

The book is a bit short overall, but in some ways it is a blessing that they did not bulk it out with unnecessary padding like so many other financial books seem to do.

I also recommend "How to Invest in Gold and Silver" by A Dunwiddie, and "Empire of Debt" by Bill Bonner.
