A collection of highlights from series two of the pioneering stand-up show of the 1970's. A selection of comics who honed their skills in the Northern working men's clubs fire out the gags non-stop, including Frank Carson, Charlie Williams, Bernard Manning, Colin Crompton and Ken Goodwin.

For anyone old enough to remember the original series this is probably worth buying. It is nice to see the original performers and some of the gags are still funny today. A little dissapointed that there wasn't more on the DVD but Hey! it still has some very funny content, Frank Carson is brilliant. What a pity that we live in a world of political correctness, I'm sure some of these jokes could not be told today, shame! I remember when jokes were just funny and people were not offended. However a good DVD for nostalgia, I even ordered the the follow up The Comedians II. Great service from Amazon as always

In the 1970s, Granada TV made the first serious attempt to put comedians from the then-burgeoning working men's club circuit onto national television. The club style of comedy is based on gags. The kind of gags that people share every day at work or in the pub. The kind of gags that begin, 'There was this feller..' or, 'This lion was walking through the jungle...' Therefore, the material was mainly collected rather than written by the comedians, and joke-theft was rife. Indeed, on this DVD you'll see more than one comic telling the same joke. So Granada got a load of these dickie-bowed gagsmiths and set them loose on a studio audience in Manchester, filming the results complete with lurid, multicoloured backdrops, and edited the results into bitesize chunks to fill up half an hour of primetime. The show was a big hit, and as such, this DVD release is a fascinating historical document, showing what passed for light entertainment in the early 1970s. On the minus side, the DVD isn't complete episodes, it's a hasty re-edit of already edited material, which makes for some very clunky jumps, and makes a nonsense of the end credits which don't show all the comics who appear and show some who don't (e.g. a delightfully sideburned Jim Bowen, looking old even then). It's also a misrepresentation of the original show, as it omits any of the racist gags which were ten-a-penny at the time. Check out the old vinyl album of the show, released at the time, if you want to enjoy the dubious pleasure that they offer. On the DVD, understandably, they've been airbrushed out of history like Trotsky's face in a photo of the Russian revolution.Read more ›

I got it for my grandchildren as a Christmas stocking gift. I wasn't with them this year so couldn't make them squirm them with my old gags....so this was a stand in.
