Let me be clear: this is not an album on the same level as Deadringer, which a lot of people seem to judge it by. It is, however, a move back towards the more hiphop based tunes that RJ does so well, with a little bit of a vocal and electronic twist. This album is a real grower; having listened a few times and loved it more with each listen, this is now on heavy rotation.
Standout tunes for me include "The Glow", "Games You Can Win" and "Small Plans". All the tunes are good examples of the complex, multi-layered production so typical of RJ's style, and many - in particular "Games You Can Win" - have perfectly matched and very catchy vocal parts too.
This is a wonderfully electic album with a real mix of styles on it. If you loved Deadringer, there's a decent chance you'll at least like this for the same production values - well worth giving it a go.

Purchased this a couple of weeks back and have listened to it over and over, it's a real grower.
Its got a great offbeat feel. RJD2's knack of constructing fantastic beats is still evident but the main surprise for me was the quality of the songs - The Glow, Games You Can Win, The Shining Path and Walk With Me are great songs with real crossover potential.
XL have probably in hindsight been a bit hasty in dropping Krohn after one album (no matter how difficult).
All in all 'The Colossus' is a real return to form and will worth giving it a whirl.

After a brief stint doing some more traditional singer-songwriter type stuff on his third album Ramble John "RJ" Krohn now returns with his fourth album which sees him back to the quality sample based hip-hop and electronic music we are used to. It is an album which carefully balances the two sides of RJD2's music. There are moments which demonstrate his ability to create intricately layered beat heavy tracks and elsewhere we see his more melodic and soulful half with tracks focused more on vocals and well judged instrumentation.
Opener `Let There Be Horns' is a wonderfully intense beat heavy track that flows very nicely into the much more soulful `Games You Can Win'. The vocals here, provided by Etheopian born American musician Kenna, are really nice and balance the calm beat and twinkling accompaniment brilliantly. `Giant Squid' then demonstrates more of RJD2's ability to layer beats and samples to create a cohesive and attractive whole. After a brief interlude `The Glow' bounces into view principally lead by a cheerful vocal line and energetic piano line with some complimentary horns at the end for good measure. This is followed though by the atmospheric `A Spaceship for Now' which starts very atmospheric before being lead by a strong beat.
The album really plays out in this manor throughout trading soulful melodies like `The Shining Path' for beats like `A Son's Cycle' and `The Stranger'. This is not to say that it gets particularly boring it's just RJD2's style and it is always worth a listen.

Received the item(double vinyl -RJD2 the Colossus) soon after the purchase, and in good condition. No complaints whatsoever.

Glimmers of excellence in a mound of mediocrity.
Although an improvement on his previous album 'The Colossus' unfortunatly comes accross as lack lustre and a little bit desperate. Read more
