Product Description

Synopsis

Eliot Porter's magnificent photographs convince the viewer to look more closely at the natural world and to appreciate its tremendous variety, complexity, delicacy and beauty. This publication, the first in-depth retrospective of Porter's work, reflects his intimate encounters with widely diverse ecosystems across the world and emphasizes the scientific and humanistic foundations of his art. Seen as a whole, Porter's work projects an eloquent call to respect and value nature and to take careful note of humanity's diverse interactions with it. That appreciation, his example suggests, helps us lead fuller lives in closer balance with the natural world around us.

Yeah I know Eliot porter shot large format but as someone else said the plates are contrasty; but I'd say, that doesn't ruin his photographs or ruin the book, they just are a little contrasty and punchy, in the same way that Kodachrome is: but still ovely pictures and the colours are nicely saturated for it , so in my book , it's ok - to get them spot on would have taken a much more expensive book

Lots of full page colour images , I think this is a fine book - Personally I'd recommend it

Pity about the printing 14 Jun 2007

Eliot Porter's images are well known and there's some worthwhile essays herein, but the reproduction quality is a disgrace. Porter's dye-transfer originals (at least the ones I've seen) never looked as contrasty as presented in this book. I expected better from Aperture.
