Book Description

Little has previously been published about this highly collectable souvenir ware which was manufactured in Scotland between 1840 and 1939. Mauchline ware is now widely collected around the world and prices are on the increase. This much needed book on the subject documents the history and manufacture of the ware and catalogues the vast array of items which were produced in various shapes, sizes and finishes. Mauchline ware appeals to a wide span of collectors as the articles are linked to activities such as sewing, smoking, reading and writing. The important connection between Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, and the town of Mauchline is also examined. The book contains a chapter on care and maintenance, a comprehensive list of dealers and a price guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Reference for Mauchline Collectors 18 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
From browsing auctions online, I'd learned that there were several types of Mauchline (the decorated wooden items made in the Scottish town of Mauchline, beginning in the late 1800s), but my knowledge was very, very limited and I wanted to know more.

I was surprised at the size of this book - it's about an inch thick. It was obviously exhaustively researched, and includes plenty of text, alongside a plethora of photos of Mauchline items of every description. I can't imagine that there was much, if anything, that was left out. It is very comprehensive.

Whether you collect tartan ware, fern ware, black lacquer pieces, or souvenir items, or just want to learn about the wide range of Mauchline items which were made and their history, I think you'll find this book very helpful and interesting. I found it inspiring - now that I know more, I want to go out looking for more pieces!

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly informative book. 16 April 2011

Format:Hardcover
This is a delightful book! I have so much respect for Trachtenberg and Keith. They have clearly put in an enormous amount of research into this book. The illustrations are educational, the book is well organized and their information is well documented. I have been tempted to collect Mauchline ware in the past but since it can be expensive and I knew little about evaluating it I never bought any. I am now ready to go hunting for some of those sppealing little boxes. Many thanks to Trachtenberg and Keith for their hard work.

I love hunting for antiques, and over the years had picked up, purely by chance, a couple Mauchline thread boxes - one tartan ware, and the other black lacquer.

From browsing auctions online, I'd learned that there were several types of Mauchline (the decorated wooden items made in the Scottish town of Mauchline, beginning in the late 1800s), but my knowledge was very, very limited and I wanted to know more.
