'The Collector' is a horror film that released theatrically in 2009 to positive reviews. The moderate box-office success of the feature has caused the makers to plan a sequel. The makers are also the writers of the films 'Saw IV', 'Saw V' & 'Saw VI'. This feature was originally titled 'The Midnight Man' and the script was originally intended to be a 'Saw' prequel but that was all scrapped.

The movie tells the story of Arkin (Josh Stewart) who breaks into his employers house to steal something to pay off a debt. On entering the house, he gets more than he bargained for in the form of an evil serial killer who is already inside tourturing the occupiers and setting up deadly booby traps.

The feature starts off a bit slow but thats the calm before the storm. It then progresses at a furious pace in an atmospheric setting. The movie finally climaxes with a twist.

The movie contains an original story, hightened tension, nail-biting suspense, an exciting cat-and-mouse game, plenty of frights and unexpected traps. Add gory violence to the equation and you've got a top-notch horror.

The flaw is that the characters are not defined well, preventing the audience from connecting with them. It's essential for the audience to connect as the fate of the characters, whatever it may be, becomes more effective.

Josh Stewart is an unlikely hero, however produces a career best performance. The show stealer is the serial killer, The Collector (Juan Fernández) who really makes the movie work. His eery presence combined with his terrifying mask and body mannerisms, was enough to give me the shivers. He is sadistic and a potential horror icon.

The direction provided by Marcus Dunstan who is also the writer of the film is inch perfect. He could've worked on character development though.

The background music score by Jerome Dillon and the sound effects gives the tension and horror a fantastic edge.

The movie is a must-watch for horror fans. It's low budget, however gives many high-budget horror films a run for their money.

The screen resolution for the Blu-ray disc is 1080p (1920 x 1080 progressive scan) & the sound format is HD MA 5.1 Dolby Digital. Both the visual and audio quality are excellent. Some of the darker scenes are at times grainy but overall it's one of the best Blu-ray's released in recent times.

'The Collector' is a claustrophobic scary shocker.

PANIC ROOM MEETS SAW 14 Oct 2010
By rc
Format:DVD
watched this tonight and overall liked the film
it had a hint of panic room in it but with a load more gore and saw like scenes.
basically a guy (arkin) who done some work on a house breaks into it to steal some jewels thinking the family are away and he finds someone is already in there.
he is then torn between getting out of there or helping the family who he realises are being held captive.
he decides on the 1st mainly because of the little girl he had befriended earlier that day.
although arkin is initially seen as a bad guy you soon have a completely differnt opinion as he risks his life numerous times to try and save the family. he ends up being a hero and very likable.
this film is full of suspense and the collector although masked is genuinly scary and frightening as he seems to have really glowing evil eyes. being so tall and threatening as well he has a sense of michael myers about him as nothing seemed to stop him or slow him down.
there is no real in-depth exploring of any of the other characters involved and a lot of this is left unanswered, why is the collector doing what he does? why did arkins wife owe money? what happened to arkins wife and daughter when they didnt pay up? etc etc.
you dont really feel too much for the charcters that died as like i said they dont do enough for you to connect with them and feel that sympathy, the ones you really feel for and route for is arkin and the little girl.
the film is genuinly scary and nailbiting as your not always 100% sure what will happen, its not overley predictable like a lot of films, they have left it open for a sequel which i really hope they do as it might clear up the unanswered bits from the 1st.
well worth a watch

The front cover says that the film was made by the writers of the famous Saw franchise, and what you get is pretty much a very simmilar (but not so clever and twisted) Saw film.
There's traps, there's gore, there's tension. That's about it, i wouldn't say this is half as good as any of the Saw films but following in those footsteps it's an okay film to watch when you have nothing better to do.
I can see most Saw fans liking this, but if you don't like film scenes where bloodshed is just for the hell of it then this is probobly a no go.

The Collector
3/5

What Saw V should have been
Came across this film almost by accident and I must say, I'm glad I did. This was originally planned to be a prequel to Saw, and I'm almost glad it didn't go down that path. Read more

Not bad, but not great
I bought The Collector, along with other so-called 'torture porn' films, after feeling the need to be shocked in the same manner that Hostel and Hostel II has done so. Read more

I wasn't expecting too much from this, as the recent run of horror films have been "torture-porn" and I pretty much expected this to follow suit. Read more
