The standard debate over what is the best Strawbs album is almost always between "Bursting at the Seams" and "Hero & Heroine." However, this budget "Collection" of Strawbs songs only has two tracks from the first, "Part of the Union" and "Lay Down," and only one, "Shine on Silver Sun" from the second. If you do not have "Down from the Sea," the group's signature grand finale piece, and "Hero & Heroine," respectively from those two pivotal albums, then you are not dealing with a serious hits collection. Once you get started on this train of thought it becomes clear that there are more key songs missing from this collection than are included. You do have "Witchwood," "Benedictus," "Grace Darling," "Tokyo Rosie," and "I Only Want My Love to Grow In Your," but I can put together a much better collection of Strawbs songs from what is NOT on this one ("Tears and Pavan," "Grave New World," "Round and Round," etc.), and that is never a good sign. I am not even sure that this will really give you a taste of why the Strawbs were the best of the second level British Folk-Rock/Progressive-Rock groups. This one is okay, but there are much better collections out there (i.e., "A Choice Selection of Strawbs") that will give you a much better sense of why this group should be remembered.

I read with dismay the review of "The Collection", it is a class selection of Strawbs compositions with a good mix of early years thrown in. I thoroughly enjoy & appreciate all of the tracks on offer, mindyou - I am an avid fan of the Strawbs from yesteryear from Dragonfly up. What one regards as hits (Good but commercial) is another matter, the Strawbs are amazing, The Collection is excellant & yes I would agree so is Choice - I,ve got both.

On paper it didn't seem as if the Strawbs of 1973 could have lasted 40 years,The 3 hit singles ran hand in hand with the same by members Hudson and Ford who became the Monks in the 80s for their punk spoof which charted at the end of the decade.
The Strawbs were actually a clearing house for many different stars some of whom like Rick Wakeman would end up at the peak of prog rock while Sandy Denny joined the Fairport Convention and became a cult
While not exactly a folk act the Strawbs were really folk rockers who wrote their own songs and for my money their finest hour was Grace Darling -a song which uses the name of the doomed lifeboat heroine to create a straight ahead love song. The influence of folk though was never far away. This was the age of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span after all and its not gone unnoticed by me that Part of the Union is ascloseasthis to The Grand Old Duke of York.Or that the young Kate Bush must have listened closely
Whetever some of the other reviewers expect on a CD called Strawbs the Collection this is just a sampler of a band who had 3 hit singles.Fortunately one of the songs included is their cover of Wild Mountain Thyme

Yet another discovery thanks to Rob Young's amazing Electric Eden opus. Despite being brought up on Fairport, the Thompsons and Sandy, all I knew about the Strawbs was Part of the Union and the sometime membership of Denny and Wakeman. I bought this cheap compilation on a bit of a whim but I love it. Not a bad track but somehow it's not rock, it's not folk but not folk-rock (as I know it) either. Some of my favourite songs on it remind me of my favourite Dylan, for example Lay Down is up there with Changing of the Guards. The spiritual but non-denominational lyrics on songs like Benedictus and I'll Carry on Beside You are reminiscent of those of the great Bill Fay (arguably a much more obscure prospect but one who has filled my sound world this last year or so). So, if this is the "average" stuff, according to oe of your reviewers, bring on the best!

The fabulous, quirky, original and scarily entertaining Strawbs at the height of their powers. They don't make them like this any more sadly., Should be compulsory listening for all young musos, and all us old ones as well !!

Took me back to my rather wild university days and my desmond degree. I won't mention the many different types of drugs though
