Product Description

CD Description

Having started their career in the industry as R&B backing singers for record producer Phil Spector, Sonny and Cher will forever be remembered as the husband-and-wife duo who gave us the summer sound of 1965.

There s much to enjoy in this comprehensive collection of 40 Atlantic Records sunshine pop classics - including their international hit, the UK #1 single, "I Got You Babe" - from a couple who, as they looked down from their stools on Top Of The Pops, had the world firmly at their feet.

Sonny & Cher were so right for their times. The Atlantic LPS they made together in the mid sixties were folk-Spector in flavor. The charm of the hippy dressed couple was a combination of their image-and their great melodies.Cher has such a distinctive voice and Sonny though not a good singer compliments her contralto . The harmonies between the two carried them through a few incarnations. These Gold-star productions get a nice treatment from Rhino on this UK release. All the songs sound great . The romantic 60's duo was perfectly placed in the Gold Star LA studio.
Only one song seems to have different vocals from the original release. "You baby" from, "In Case you're in Love" their 3rd LP.The song has faster vocals and more energy.
Other than that all tunes from the feature film "Good times" are here sans the altered I got you babe.
Missing is the non LP cuts including "Have I stayed too long",and "It's a Beautiful Story".Podunk, a vaudeville ditty also is absent on this collection. Look at us is here intact ,excepting 500 Miles. However when paired with Rhinos other Sonny and Cher collection we get a pretty good overview of the Bono's talents. Cher still soars today-but these songs should have landed both in the rock n Roll Hall of Fame!I regret that this compilation is in mono-so probably the same transfers from the sundazed re-releases.

While ignoring Cher's solo music from the same period, this comprehensive collection contains the hits that Sonny and Cher had together, plus all but two of the three tracks that appeared on three Sonny and Cher albums.

Pictures of four album covers are illustrated in the booklet. All I ever need is you (from 1971) doesn't really belong, since none of the tracks from it are featured here. Like the other three, it has been made available on CD, and might be your next purchase if you enjoy this CD. The other three pictures are of In case you're in love, The wondrous world of Sonny and Cher, and Look at us. These albums and the hits from the period are the basis of this set. The two omitted album tracks are Podunk (which I don't remember hearing) and 500 miles (which I know via country and folk versions, including by Peter Paul and Mary).

Sonny's solo hit Laugh at me is here, but not Cher's hit Bang bang. It can be found on The Singles+, another Sonny and Cher compilation, but one that focuses primarily on Cher's music of the sixties and seventies. It would make another good companion to this set.

The only flaw is in the booklet notes, where the first seven words denigrate the Beatles. They had some good hits of their own that year, but they allowed Matt Monro to have the UK hit with Yesterday (their most covered song). Perhaps the writer forgot that, but leaving that comment aside, this is a perfect compilation.

I have given this product 5 stars because I have purchased this for a Christmas present for a relative and after reading the back of the CD I think that she will love it. It has all the classics on it. Thank you.

Love it! It's Sonny and Cher, what could be wrong? Takes me right back to my youth, when people often told me I looked like Cher. I wish I could say that now! If you are a Sonny and Cher fan, you will love this.
