Omar first came to prominence more than 2 decades ago, when his debut single for indie label Kongo Dance Mr. Postman/You And Me made him a hot name on London’s underground. It was soon afterwards that the success of his Ohio Players-influenced love ballad, the much celebrated There’s Nothing Like This, led to his signing to Gilles Peterson’s Talkin’ Loud label. Omar ... 4.0 out of 5 stars Omar is King 4 May 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
How can you not love this guy? I think that this should really be a 'best of' album, with some of his more recent stuff on it, but hey.... (something to do with his label I hear). In any case, this is a cool collection of Mr Lye Fooks early works & it does not disappoint... From the timeless nu-soul classic 'There's nothing like this' to the soulful 'Who chooses the seasons' with Carleen Anderson, this is a must for all lovers of Soul music

5.0 out of 5 stars Who is Omar??? 14 April 2006
By Pillazz
Format:Audio CD
Who is Omar??? of the UK's most underated artists is the short answer. This album is a great opportunity to sample what is the unique sound of Omar in all his melodic glory.

Some of these tracks miss some of Othe highs found on other albums, but tracks such as Music, Tomorrow and There's Nothing Like demonstrate the man at his very best.

The man a hidden for yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 20 Oct 2012

This album is superb. Saw Omar live and got this album. Very satisfied. From the first track the feel is sweet and chocolately. I play it very often. The new and old mix well on the collection. Great addition to my music library. Strong music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a BEST OF... 4 April 2005
By Qawi S. Robinson - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For those waiting for a true compilation, this is almost it. This album has tracks from his first two albums -- 'There's nothing like this' (2, 3, 8, 9, 14) and 'Music' (1, 4-7, 12, 13). NOTHING from 'For Pleasure', 'This is not a love song', or 'Best By Far', which could've easily made this album the definitive collection. Basically call this the Talkin Loud/Kongo Records Compilation, so hopefully the others from RCA and Oyster Music are soon to follow. Still, for those unfamiliar, this is a decent enough sampling for most. The only *new* tracks were 'Use Me' and 'Reality' (which is a take off from Get to Know you Better albeit with socio-political lyrics.) As far as albums goes, it flows quite well. The first 3 tracks are mellow, 4 and 5 are upbeat, 6 and 7 to some degree are let downs. By Track 8 things start to pick up again. Tracks 4, 5, and 12 are my favorites which showcase a variation of styles even in fast tempo songs. Tracks 1, 3, and 13 are good too from a ballad perspective.

Still waiting for a full "Best of Compilation". But this will do for now. 4.5 rounded to 5. Omar's website -- [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Get a taste of Omar 26 Jan 2008
By M. Harris - Published on
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This CD is great to get an idea of who Omar Lye-Fook is. I am SO glad I added this one to my collection. Other CDs by Omar that you should check out are "For Pleasure" and "Best By Far" - both EXCELLENT CDs. None of the songs on this "best of" are on either of those CDs, so it's nice you won't have duplicates.

Fave Tracks:
*There's nothing like this - Wow! This is an island groove...make you wanna sip a drink with an umbrella in it! (2nd fave track on CD)

*I'm in Love - Groovy, mid-tempo love song, Omar style!

*Use me - Remake of Bill Withers unlike you would ever imagine! Ha! Acapella..and you can really appreciate his vocals. I LOVE his VOICE!

*Tomorrow - Mid-tempo groove; please understand how talented he is...not just vocals, but as a musician

*FINE (acapella) - VOCALS! VOCALS! VOCALS! Okay, I think this might be my favorite track. What a way to close out the album. This song will make you start it all over again.

If you're new to Omar, you will appreciate his vocals and musical arrangements. It's really a crime that he's not more known in the US (*big pout*). If you're already an Omar fan, then go ahead an add this to your shopping cart - you know how Omar DOES...don't cheat yourself.

As I always say with great music...if you've come this far, whether a friend or amazon recommended this artist to this album. You will not regret it, especially at the price. Used, for about the price of a value meal at a fast food spot?? Seriously. Pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more Omar in the U.S. 23 Jun 2012
By TG the Reader/Writer - Published on
I got hooked on Omar with his "For Pleasure" album way back in 1996ish. I've been off and on searching over the years for his music since I no longer live in DC, where it was a bit easier to tap into the foreign market (at the time, I picked this CD up from Tower Records). Losing the CD was devastating. Still, I'm piecing it back together starting with "There's Nothing Like This." I think my first child was conceived to that song!! Literally. I'm glad to experience his new music and know he was not a one hit wonder. Need more accessibility in the U.S.
