Lloyd Cole is undoubtedly one of the most underrated British songwriters of the past twenty years. His solo work largely ignored over here bar a small but devoted fanbase, he has retreated to New York to hang out with his family and the NY music scenesters like Matthew Sweet and Robert Quine. I have no real gripes with the music on here - its great, from the wordy jangly pop of 'Perfect Skin' to Lloyd's more relaxed, almost countryish solo stuff such as 'Like Lovers Do' - so the reason for just a four star review is the packaging and track selection. It just seems a bit lazy on behalf of the record company. Anyone who bought the Commotions 84-89 collection has a better selection of their tracks, and the handful of solo songs just don't justify a 'best of' (only two tracks from the brilliant 'Love Story'). The usual music biz selling point of two new tracks worked on me (and probably every other sad completist) but why couldn't a new album be released? The packaging is fairly frugal, just a tracklisting when some form of sleevenotes or photos might have given it more the feel of a retrospective. A case of great music, shame about the concept. Lloyd, and his fans deserve better.

For me, Lloyd Coles music can do no wrong. Lyrics are interesting, musicality is superb, track variety is refreshingly varied. Yes, he has a unique voice, which, to me adds so much to the listening experience. Sad that he is no longer writing great songs and making great music.
