Biography

Kirsty Anna MacColl (10 October 1959 – 18 December 2000) was an English singer-songwriter.

MacColl scored several pop hits from the early 1980s to the early 1990s. During this era, she often sang on recordings produced by her husband Steve Lillywhite, notably those of The Smiths and the song "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues.

MacColl was killed in a controversial boating incident in Mexico.

Product Description

CD Description

The voice from Fairytale Of New York; the singer of everyone's favourite Days; the writer of Tracey Ullman's big hit They Don't Know; the sultry figure behind the club and radio hit In These Shoes? Kirsty MacColl had her moments in the spotlight from time to time and she was undoubtedly held with great affection from anyone who came across her.

Praised by peers such as Jools Holland, Bono, Morrissey and Johnny Marr, Kirsty was a highly acclaimed songwriter and a prized singer with a very rare talent for finely tuning vocal harmonies - she would blend overdubs of her own vocals to create her unique "wall of sound" for artists such as The Smiths, The Rolling Stones, Simple Minds and Alison Moyet.

This collection brings you the best from Kirsty's golden era at the dawn of the 90s, when she released a pair of poppy, literate and uplifting albums: Kite (1989) and Electric Landlady (1991).

Unlike today, when Record Companies are more than willing to sign new female singer/song writers, Kirsty MacColl struggled for most of her musical career to get a decent record contract. In the 80's and 90's most record companies seemed content to sit back and allow many male artists to put out a succession of mediocre and half baked albums (Yes I mean you Rod, Sting, Van, Elvis Costello etc) but largely ignored their female rivals.

This collection of songs is taken from the few short years when Kirsty was signed to Virgin records and had their support to put out 2 great albums "Kite" and "Electric Landlady" and a string of singles.

As always with Kirsty, this is a collection of sharp, ascerbic and funny songs written against killer tunes, often with driving danceable rhythms. As Kirsty herself said she did not want to be a demur "Laura Ashley" lady singer, as this collection proves. I believe the songs have been hand picked by Kirsty's mother Jean MacColl and it is an excellent selection.

If you only know Kirsty Maccoll as the singer of the best ever Christmas song, then this is a great place to start to find out what a brilliant songwriter and singer she was. If you know her songs already but want an excuse to buy this, well it has a lovely cover picture, great sleeve notes and is cheap too!
