Any overview of the medium is bound to be at the mercy of the fickle hand of taste and trend as time goes by, but Laura Noble truly understands the medium, both its technicalities and psychology.
The book ties together the sprawling and - at times - controversial history of the medium, in a self confessed shorthand, that nevertheless deftly satisfies in its thoroughness. Alongside this, we are given a unique insight into the practicalities of collecting, curation and navigating the art market. What grants this volume the most longevity however is in the delicious profiles of images plucked from the history of the medium, contemporary and vintage, obscure and iconic, each given a rich and eloquent analysis.
An excellent work I return to time and time again.
