4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories of 19th century Russia 29 Mar. 2013

When I bought a Kindle this was one of the first collections of stories that I downloaded onto it. I especially wanted to read The Torrents of Spring and A Sportsman's Sketches. Now,two years later, I find it is a collection I often return to. The short stories contain sublime descriptions of the vast Russian countryside in all seasons and times of day, and the portraits of the country people have a fairy-tale, almost pagan, quality. The translations are, I assume, Victorian/Edwardian in origin, but they are easy to read. I am not familiar enough with Turgenev to know how complete the collection is. It doesn't contain his play A Month in the Country. Other drawbacks to the collection are that the short stories are simply listed together without being divided into collections, and there is no biographical or critical information. For no apparent reason, the novel The Torrents of Spring is listed among the short stories.
Turgenev is a delightful writer and I'd certainly recommend this but it was published a few years ago and ebook collections have come much further since then. At the moment (March 2013) this still seems the best Turgenev collection available. But it does leave you with the feeling that Turgenev has yet to find his ideal ebook publisher.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good story, but... 17 Jan. 2011

I have only just received the Collected works of Turgenev and you could say that at £1.45, it is an absolute bargain and the first novel, Fathers and Sons, looks as though it will be a cracking good read. The problem is that, having only read three pages, there is a disadvantage. The english leaves so much to be desired. In the first few pages there are infelicities, such as: He owned, about twelve miles from the posting station, a fine property... This would read so much more comfortably: He owned a fine property, about etc. there is another example on the third page and each time it gives you a jolt. I hope it is not going to go on all the way through the book. It might be better to get the same book in a different translation.

5.0 out of 5 stars mr Turgenev never disappoints 9 Jun. 2013
Turgenev has all the depth one can find in the Russians, without the slow mannerism. "Lighter" than Tolstoj and Dostoevski, deep as Puskin but with a sense of reality. Undoubtedly my suggestion for those who want to start reading Russian authors!

A with a lot of the Russian authors, you either like them or you don't... Not usually much room for a middle-ground view.

Lots of typos on Kindle edition. Bit irritating. Good Russian tales though, not quite up there with the best.
