Product Description

CD Description

Sounding like a groovy hybrid of The Free Design and The Mamas And The Papas, the L.A.-based COLLAGE recorded one fab LP for Smash Records, made appearances on American Bandstand, and Happening '68 and then promptly disappeared.

Released in January 1968, The Collage features songs penned by CURT BOETTCHER, ROGER NICHOLS, THE ADDRISI BROTHERS, PRICE AND WALSH, and several originals by the band themselves.

This first-ever CD issue of THE COLLAGE--from the ORIGINAL MASTERS--includes EIGHT BONUS TRACKS, including four cuts not found on the original LP.

The full-colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes that feature the participation of original band members.

Produced by PHIL SPECTOR/WRECKING CREW alumnus STEVE DOUGLAS, this gem of an album also features the participation of fellow Wrecking Crew members HAL BLAINE, JOE OSBORN, LARRY KNECHTEL, and MIKE DEASY.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great presentation of an interesting album. 14 July 2011
Great example of what we now call "Sunshine Pop". Basically a more orchestrated Mamas & Papas sound - if you're a fan of this mini-genre you're gonna need this. Some nice group written compositions and some famous names in the writers credits for the covers. I bought it to replace my scratchy vinyl copy. The very best CD reissues give you convenience, extra tracks and sleevenotes that bring the whole album to life. This, like other releases on the label, has all of those.

2.0 out of 5 stars PSYCHEDELIC POP? 15 Jun 2011
They were good to sing with Sonny & Cher in a small drive - in. A simple band, simple songs, to forget very quickly...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good 27 Feb 2012

Vocal pop, like all genre labels, is a relatively useless term. The Lettermen, Beach Boys and Free Design all fall under this heading while making three completely different types of music.

The Collage are not as famous as any of these bands--I have loved the genre for about ten years and never knew of them--but work in similar circles. What defines a vocal groups style is the music behind those heavenly voices, and heavenly voices are aplenty on this Collage album

For me, this music is a little tepid, sounding like 60s soft-rock, sometimes easy listening, with fantastic harmonies. There is nothing as sappy as the Lettermen, jazzy as the Free Design, or ambitious as mid-60's Beach Boys. There is no WOW! factor, except the vocals, which are as tight as a drum and smooth as silk.

One could argue that the music is merely a bed for the vocals, and gussying it up would interfere with the thrust of the harmony, but any listen to Brian Wilson, The Free Design or Phil Spector's arrangements shoots that argument into the pop music sea.
"
Still, there is quality here, and special interest in that music which played between the Beatles and Motown on 60's AM radio. That which has been forgotten. This stuff, though not my favorite, has the indelible aura of wonderful naivete' that has been permanently extracted from our world. That and the angelic singing here get my endorsement, even if I am not singing it from the vocal pop hills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 'lost' album 10 Sep 2011
By mbx1 - Published on Amazon.com
I cannot believe this is available on Amazon. I haven't seen this album in 43 years. I remember my older sister buying it in the bargain bin at a drug store in 1967. It became one of my fav albums. Interesting, original songs, great harmonies and vocals. Sounds a little bit like the Mama's and the Papa's, only much more creative musically. This is a real lost artifact of the 60's. Buy this is you want an interesting (and musical) experience from the past!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Pop music 11 Jun 2011

Sounding like a Momma's and Poppa's/Fifth Dimension blend the vocals, songs and arrangements are quite musical. With writers like Harry Nilsson this is classic late 60's Pop/Rock that is well worth having in your collection. Didn't have a "hit" hit but were just bubbling under and should have with the right timing and promotion.

Not only did mans journey into space peak between 1969 and 1972 during which the 12 (only what ? 8 left alive) men who walked on the moon did their stuff : music also peaked during those years. The rest is just winding down and fiddling about. 15 2 hours ago
