Book Description

8 July 2010 Spellcrackers

All Genny wants is to live the quiet life and to do her job at Spellcrackers.com, but there's her tangled personal life to sort out first. She's being haunted by ghosts who want her help. Her witch neighbours want her evicted. Genny's sort-of-Ex - and now her new boss - can't decide whether he wants their relationship to be business or pleasure. And then there's the queue of vampires all wanting her to paint the town red - how long will it be before they stop taking no for an answer?

But when one of her human friends is murdered by sidhe magic, Genny is determined to find the killer. She needs help to find the real murderer, and that means calling on some of the most capricious and seductive fae - but her search is hindered by the vampires, who have their own political agenda. All the evidence points to Genny - she's the only sidhe fae in London - and she's named the main suspect; it's not long before she's on the run, not just from the police, but from some of London's most powerful supernaturals.

About the Author

Suzanne McLeod has been a cocktail waitress, dance group promoter and barmaid at Coventry City Football Club (the last despite having no love for the beautiful game; she had to pay the rent somehow). After years in retail management, she started writing. THE SWEET SCENT OF BLOOD, the first of the Spellcrackers.com series, was her first novel. She lives with her husband and rescue dogs in Bournemouth.

4.0 out of 5 stars a stunning read 25 Sep 2009
By Helen Hollick VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I enjoyed book one of the Spellcrackers.com series - Cold Kiss of Death, book two is even more enjoyable.

It races along at a spellcracking speed with so many twists and turns that there is no chance to out-guess the ending before you get to it.

I love the characters, especially the Kelpie and the vampire, Malik (it really is not good to fall for a vampire, but he is rather gorgeous....)
So refreshing to read something different about vampires and magic - while all the "obligatory" elements are also cleverly woven into the story.

As an author myself I know just how hard it is to bring reality into a story - "the art of writing is creating the believable from the imaginary" - and believe me Ms McLeod has the Craft of Writing at 100% diamond level!

I have one protest.
Waiting for book three is going to be hard!
(Note: the author is known to me: however, this is a genuine personal review of a book I enjoyed reading)

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking series - just getting better 28 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed CKoD more than the SSoB, mainly because I felt I understood who the characters were and the world they inhabited. It felt as though a lot of the ground breaking had been done and the story could now move on and tell itself without the need for copious explanatations. The characters are interesting because they are all flawed, even our heroine Sidhe fae Genny. The series is clearly onion-like as layers are peeled away and you learn more about Genny and her family's past life. London is again realised superbly in an urban fantasy background, this time the Embankment gets the treatment.
Looking forward to No. 3 - only downside is that Spellcrackers agency doesn't really play a part.
I'd compare it to Richelle Mead's Storm Born/Thorn Queen series if anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars London Fae 31 Aug 2012
By Curiosity Killed The Bookworm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Cold Kiss of Death is the second book in the fabulous Spellcrackers urban fantasy series by Suzanne McLeod. This review will contain spoilers for the first book, The Sweet Scent of Blood, and really they do need to be read in order!

Sidhe Genny would love to be left to live her life in peace. But now both the vampires and the lesser fae of London know who she is, they just won't leave her alone and her witch neighbours would like to see her evicted. To make things worse, her local baker is murdered; killed by sidhe magic. And the only sidhe in town is her...

This world just keeps getting better, expanding on existing characters and introducing some great new ones. I just love that there's a kelpie living in the River Thames! The river and its banks become entwined with the story, the setting becoming a crucial part. I always enjoy settings that I know well too (yes, I seem to spend a lot of time lurking round the river when I'm in London). Genny even pops down to the Clink Museum at one point, filled with ghosts of course.

We get to learn a lot more about the curse that binds the lesser fae in London and out of the Fair Lands, as well as Genny's family secrets. There are naiads and dryads to be added to the mix, and Grainne who appears to Genny as a large, silver hound. We are introduced to the moths, venom junkies who risk everything in the seediest parts of Sucker Town (a.k.a. Greenwich) for a hit to the carotid.

Then there's Genny vampire alter ego, Rosa, who plays an important part to the plot. Malik is absent at the start and Genny is convinced it's because of her connection to Rosa. But never fear, Malik does return further on and we learn more about his love hate relationship with Rosa and what's really going on when Genny takes over her body (something she is trying not to do, but you know, fate always gets in the way). If you're on team Finn, he gets his fair share of airtime too, with Genny trying to patch up their friendship and maybe more...
