United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Portuguese ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Box Set, Interactive Menu, Multi-DVD Set, Remastered, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Unholy undertaker, sinful savant, denizen of dreams and hallucinations... a living legend amongst horror and gore fans across the world and the foremost Brazilian director of any genre, José Mojica Marins - better known to most as `Coffin Joe' - remains one of the most unique and peerless directors in the world today. With his trademark top hat, black cape and talon-like fingernails, Coffin Joe is a horror icon in his own right. Whilst as a director, Marins has an unrelentingly original and outlandishly personal filmmaking style that can only be compared to a dep Films Comprise: 1. At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul (1964): Zé do Caixão is a grave digger in a small Brazilian town searching for the perfect woman to bear him a perfect child. He kills his wife, who is unable to conceive a child, and sets out to find someone else who can produce a child to continue his bloodline, and thus, grant him his only chance at immortality. 2. This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse (1967): Zé do Caixão returns to continue his quest for the perfect bride. Aided by a hunchbacked assistant he embarks on an even more brutal campaign of terror. For his sins Zé is dragged head first into the underworld. 3. Strange World of Coffin Joe (1968): A triptych explores the dark side. 5.0 out of 5 stars Just putting things right 8 Dec 2011
Format:DVD
Due to the previous poor reviews of this box set criticising the transfers, I held back from buying it for over a year. However I eventually took the plunge - and I'm very glad I did. The quality of the transfers is absolutely fine. No problems whatsoever. I recommend this set whole heartedly - we are very lucky to have these rare films available in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great box set 30 Aug 2011
By JJ
Format:DVD
I have been a fan of Marins films for the past few years now. I am in the US and it's practically impossible to get a boxed set of these films over here (without paying hundreds of dollars). You need a region 2 player for this set. These films are graphic, bizarre exploitation films. I suggest you see a film before purchasing as they are not for everyone. The quality of the set is good, copies of the films are better than what they ever play on IFC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection!! 10 April 2012

This collection is excellent!!Strange and surrealist movies by Mojica Marins. The image quality of the films is good. I don't understand the negative review about this. We need to understand that these pictures are rare, created with low budget and exposed to censorship, and that their complete restoration is not possible. They are great and the collection is a real bargain. I didn't know about this director before and now I'm very happy to have some of his films at home. Just the documentary about Mojica Marins and his films, that is excellent, worth the price. So don't hesitate and buy it now!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good movies, TERRIBLE transfers. 12 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
Those transfers manage to be worse than the ones from the Brazilian Box Set (that I own). Anchor Bay seriously dropped the ball on this one.

This is as depraved as it gets in places. A reviewer from 'Dead Central' correctly stated that "In Coffin Joe [Marins] has crafted a horror icon so full of sadism, immorality and brutality that he would undoubtedly make even Jigsaw squirm and send Jason running home to Mommy."

I couldn't have put it better.

Another says "A blend of Mario Bava, Luis Bunuel and Russ Meyer." Again accurate.

What I would do first is watch the documentary - The strange world of Mojica Marins (2001). Through doing this you'll give yourself the much needed head-start required to truly grasp the feel of these movies, to understand what you are letting yourself in for.

These movies were made made on next to nothing a long time ago. Bare that in mind too. (Michael Bay had nothing to do with them.)

The only reason I do not give *****stars is because of the transfer in places, particularly on "The strange world of Coffin Joe", it is extremely muffled at the beginning (but also in a sense adds to the charm, nothing here is all squeaky clean 'n' Hollywood). Other than that, this is beaut! :)
