Product Description

Product Description

* New York's classy Coed label blazed a trail through the US charts in the late 50s and early 60s with a series of Doo Wop and pop singles which really were something special.

* Bandleader and music publisher George Paxton might never have formed Coed were it not for the changes wrought upon the American record industry by the rock'n'roll explosion of the mid-50s. Paxton had much in common with Archie Bleyer, another former bandleader who had launched a successful record label, Cadence. * Coed released 87 singles of which 32 reached the Hot 100. US compiler Walter DeVenne has concentrated (though not exclusively) on the glorious vocal group records which formed a large part of Coed's repertoire. * Mastered in stereo from the original tapes by 'Little Walter' DeVenne and our own Duncan Cowell, the Coed Records Story reflects the care and attention Coed originally lavished on these classics from the golden age of New York pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight ahead pop 28 Mar 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
This is pure High School Pop which was the way the land lay before the British Invasion and where the Duprees were the label's biggest act.
It ran till 1964 by which time things had changed rapidly ie the Beach Boys, the 4 Seasons and the Beatles.
At least it had with this label which decided to close its doors Yet in a coupe of years the same mine was being explored by Ronnie Dove

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Compilation from Ace Records 18 Jun 2008
By Amanda's Attic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Ace Records has done it again with The Coed Records Story, another outstanding compilation of most of the best recordings from Coed Records, an independent label from the late 1950s and early 1960s. Missing, however, are any recordings by Adam Wade, probably Coed's most popular artist. (Ace must not have had the rights to reissue his recordings.) The sound quality on the CD is excellent as are the liner notes. There are great recordings here by The Crests, The Rivieras, The Duprees, The Harptones, Trade Martin, and others. But, contrary to the current listing information on Amazon, Shirley & Lee had nothing to do with this CD.
4.0 out of 5 stars Once Again, In The Doo Wop Night 15 Mar 2011
By Alfred Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Sometimes looking back at the genesis of the 1950s rock explosion that produced some of the classic music that defined my generation, the generation of "68, it was individual performers like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, who drove the music, other times it was the lyrics, the Tin Pan Alley-etched lyrics, and, as here, sometimes it was the sound, the sound associated with a particular label. One thinks of Sam Phillips' Sun Records with the early rockabilly and blues explosion. Or Verve, Or Decca, or later the Motown sound. One place where the doo-wop, or doo-wop oriented sub-genre got a full workout was with Coed Records who story is told here in informative booklet form, and more importantly, by something like a greatest hits CD of the best work from that label's heyday.

Now, like every musical genre, some of this material is strictly of the moment, that doo-wop moment, and some of it was performed by one-hit Johnnies and Janies, but a few, and that is all that one can expect, are classics. Here those classics include 16 Candles and Step By Step (songs you prayed, prayed out loud that they would play, and play at the end of the school dance night), The Crests; You Belong To Me (ditto), The Duprees; and, The Last Dance (ditto again) , The Harptones.
