3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty basic 11 Jan 2013
By Meesha
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book on the fact it sounded like a different spin on the Hunger Games trilogy, and I had previously read Suzanne Weyn's Distant Waves.

If you can get this book for cheap, it is worth it. It's 250 pages long, and I managed to finish it within two bus journeys (on the same day) going to and from work.

It's a good story, if sometimes a bit too convenient, unbelievable and predictable. The story centres around Kayla, who is on the cusp of turning 17. It's set in the future, and people have bar codes tattooed onto their wrists (although the cover shows the tattoo placed on the upper forearm, I think the placement would have been better actually on the wrist, as described in the book) which have all your details included in them. But there is something suspicious about what exact information is included, and how it affects different people ...

If you're looking for a quick and easy book to read, this is for you. Suzanne has written an interesting and intriguing book, which will get you thinking about what could happen in the future. As I mentioned, it's in the same kind of vein as the Hunger Games, but without the Battle Royale scenes.

For such a short book, the character development isn't up to much. The only characters who really get the majority of page time are Kayla and Amber, the rest of the cast can only be described as cardboard cut outs. In fact, I can't even remember half of the names now.

The only sections of the book which I didn't like were the 'dream' sequences (these made NO sense) and I think the ending could have done with some work. But then again, I am not really the target audience for this sort of book (YA books have come on in leaps and bounds - in my day all we had was Sweet Valley High and Babysitter's Club!) and I do think Suzanne has done a good job with this book.

There is a sequel The Bar Code Rebellion, which is on my wishlist, but I'm now a bit unsure about it. There is a lot of hints, particularly in the dream sequences, that could possibly be used in a sequel. But I think it would have to bring something new and not just be a re-hash of the original, which I suspect it could be. Plus, it's not cheap to get a hold of, and all the copies listed on Amazon are shipping from the USA. I might consider it in the future however. I will be interested to see what other books she has written, as she does have potential as an author.

4.0 out of 5 stars cool 26 Aug 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Set in the future where bar code tattoos have just become mandatory to anyone over the age of seventeen.

Kayla is approaching her seventeeth birthday but is hesitant about the tattoo. After her mother commits suicide, she is betrayed by her friends, and some people's tattoos malfunctioning, Kayla freaks and runs away.

She has always had strange dreams, but when she reaches a rebel group in the mountains bordering Canada, their leader teaches Kayla how to use the power of telepathy and telekenis.

People all over the world are rebelling against the tattoo, and the government is becomeing ever more vicious in their acts in quelling them.

Kayla and the moutain rebels join together and use their combined powers to storm the government stronghold, fighting for freedom and a new beginning...

I loved it and thought it was very well written.

2.0 out of 5 stars good premise, not so good writing 30 April 2007
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
After reading the back of the book, I decided to read this. The premise was unique and interesting, and it sounded good. However, after reading it I regret ever having done so. The writing was poor, and the author seemed to flit from one thing to another without a thought of consistency or plot development. One moment she meets new people, then she flees again, then she suddenly develops an aptitude for telepathy. Its hard to figure out where the author is trying to go with anything, and the book as a whole was just a mess. I definitely do not recommend this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother 23 May 2008
By Katelyn Revill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book only sounds good in the plot review. In truth, it is an absolutely horribly written book with plot twists that are so predictable and cookie cutter characters. There is hardly any real worth to reading this book, which is dissappointing because the idea behind it is very interesting, although not original.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for teenagers who don't want to be challenged 20 Mar 2005
By Crystal - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Overall this wasn't a bad book. The premise was interesting, the action was fast-paced(although some events were far-fetched and a little too convenient), and it kept me entertained. A teenager looking for an entertaining book to keep them occupied in English class should pick this up.

However, readers looking for something complex and deep in the story will be disappointed. The characters are underdeveloped and flat(Mfumbe and Zekeal are practically the same person), the plot-twists are often predictable or convenient, and the ending seems rushed. The author could have done so much more with this.
