I should say before I start that I absolutely adore The Thick Of It, a profane, gratuitously offensive and downright hilarious bit of political satire which should be seen by anyone with an interest in politics. This book is written by Ian Martin, a self-described "swearing consultant" who according to Wikipedia is responsible for some of the series' more "colourful" language.
Such "colourful" language is well on display here, with depictions of a House of Parliament constantly filled with cries of "wanker" from the assorted MPs and in which everyone swears themselves blind while making sexual and scatological remarks about their respective opposition. I found this laugh-out-loud hilarious - some of the characteristically abusive descriptions offered of various real-life politicians (describing David Cameron quite accurately as looking like a "crying boy" being one of the few printable examples) made me guffaw myself stupid. For something of a taste, Mr Martin wrote a comment piece on Guardian.co.uk a week or so ago which is in much the same vein.
I did, originally, want to knock off a star because of the sheer amount of profanity and how it might bother some (those of a sensitive disposition are well advised to read something else - in case you haven't got the message yet, if you don't like swearing this will make you cry) however have put it back on because a) it doesn't bother me and b) Martin, as proven by this and the Thick Of It, is probably our generations most accomplished swearer (apart, by repute, from me, however Amazon won't let me demonstrate such skill sadly).
What comes through in the end is a very angry sense of betrayal and of disgust with politics and, as you may have gathered from the title, our Lib Dem-Tory coalition government. Several passages are nothing more than angry and profane (big surprise there) denunciations and direct insults towards current government policy, and often how Labour have little to oppose it with.
In short - if you don't mind swearing but do like your political satire exceptionally biting, try this. I found it funny, anyway.
