Product Description

Review

"Ian Martin comes closer than any human being I know to articulating what's really going on inside the heads of our political representatives. The fact that these expressions are mostly obscene does nothing to dampen the truth. Indeed, what clearer way can we express the fury, frustration, and childishness of modern day political debate than through through Ian Martin's gargantuanly colourful lexicon? He knocks David and Jeremy Paxman into a massive f*cking cocked hat." --Armando Iannucci

Book Description

From The Thick of It's legendary 'swearing consultant' comes an outrageous, hilarious and topical satire of the coalition.

Anger is an energy 5 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I should say before I start that I absolutely adore The Thick Of It, a profane, gratuitously offensive and downright hilarious bit of political satire which should be seen by anyone with an interest in politics. This book is written by Ian Martin, a self-described "swearing consultant" who according to Wikipedia is responsible for some of the series' more "colourful" language.

Such "colourful" language is well on display here, with depictions of a House of Parliament constantly filled with cries of "wanker" from the assorted MPs and in which everyone swears themselves blind while making sexual and scatological remarks about their respective opposition. I found this laugh-out-loud hilarious - some of the characteristically abusive descriptions offered of various real-life politicians (describing David Cameron quite accurately as looking like a "crying boy" being one of the few printable examples) made me guffaw myself stupid. For something of a taste, Mr Martin wrote a comment piece on Guardian.co.uk a week or so ago which is in much the same vein.

I did, originally, want to knock off a star because of the sheer amount of profanity and how it might bother some (those of a sensitive disposition are well advised to read something else - in case you haven't got the message yet, if you don't like swearing this will make you cry) however have put it back on because a) it doesn't bother me and b) Martin, as proven by this and the Thick Of It, is probably our generations most accomplished swearer (apart, by repute, from me, however Amazon won't let me demonstrate such skill sadly).

What comes through in the end is a very angry sense of betrayal and of disgust with politics and, as you may have gathered from the title, our Lib Dem-Tory coalition government. Several passages are nothing more than angry and profane (big surprise there) denunciations and direct insults towards current government policy, and often how Labour have little to oppose it with.

In short - if you don't mind swearing but do like your political satire exceptionally biting, try this. I found it funny, anyway.

I first came across Ian Martin on Twitter, where he is brilliant. Then I came across him on Martian FM, where he is also brilliant. Unsurprisingly, this is brilliant too.

This is a very clever, piercingly satirical, crazy and original portrait of the state of British politics. It's the kind of book that compels you to read sections of it out to people around you it's so good.

That said, it took me a while to get into it and I spent the first few chapters wondering whether it would have been better off as a straight novel instead of a book in script format. I'm over that now though. The format works and the writing compensates for the fact that this isn't a novel with deep and meaningful characters that build up over time.

Instead, it's a scathing piss-take of our politicians and political system, executed brilliantly, by one of the best satirical writers around.

The other reviews so far posted have the details so all I am writing this for is to further endorse the suggestion that if you want a pant-wettingly funny hour or two then read this book. DO NOT read it on the tube as I did, because you will attract all sorts of strange looks as you try, and fail, to stifle your laughter - you know the feeling. Yes it is profane, yes it is "Viz" style toilet humour a lot of the time, but it is also very sharply observed and strangely believable.
A must as a christmas present for your broad minded uncle.
