Product Description

Available for the first time on DVD completely uncut in it's full length version, this action-packed thriller ranks alongside Hitchcock's great British thrillers. When ex-spy David Somers takes a low-profile job in the country cataloguing a butterfly collection, he finds that dangerous work continues to pursue him. David grows fond of his employer s niece, a fragile, fey young woman named Sophie. When Sophie is framed for the murder of Hick - the spiteful handyman, he becomes embroiled in a murder mystery and goes underground with the beautiful suspect. The fugitives stay one step ahead of the police until the breathless climax. Starring the Oscar nominated and Emmy Award winning Trevor Howard (Gandhi, The Third Man, Superman) in one of his greatest films alongside the Oscar nominated and Emmy Award winning Jean Simmons (Spartacus, Guys and Dolls, Elmer Gantry) and directed by Ralph Thomas (Doctor in the House).

Hooray!! The opening sequence at London Airport has been restored in this much-awaited re-release of this under-rated classic British thriller. Rich in period atmosphere, with sequences featuring Holborn (Kingsway) underground station, London docks, Newcastle Upon Tyne, the Lake District and Liverpool. Trolleybuses, trams, Wolseley and Austin police cars, a half-cab Leyland Tiger single-deck bus, the Liverpool Overhead Railway and the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board freight railway all evoke a vanished era.

One of the best films from Pinewood Studios, THE CLODED YELLOW is a British thriller very much in the style of Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 version of THE 39 STEPS.

I won't spoil it by giving the plot away, but if you enjoy THE 39 STEPS, you'll enjoy THE CLOUDED YELLOW. The musical score is by Benjamin Frankel, who back in the 1930s was one of the arrangers for the BBC Dance Orchestra directed by Henry Hall. Watch for cameo appearances by Sam Kydd and Geoffrey Keen.

4.0 out of 5 stars ? or is it the condition of the film.... 17 July 2010

I have to agree with D. Payne regarding the picture quality of this DVD. There seems to be a jumpiness in places throughout the film. I did find I adapted to this, but some viewers may not. I did wonder if the original film had broken up in places and had to be spliced; some years ago I saw a terrible copy of 'Oh What a Lovely War' at a local cinema film club. The secretary said the film had arrived in shocking condition, and the projectionist had made over a hundred repairs (splices) before he thought it would be watchable. The faults on The Clouded Yellow are very similar, so I wonder. Either way, I think the DVD company should either sort the problem, or at least note on the box that some forebearance is needed due to the age and condition of the film.

All a shame really, as it is an excellent film and something of a rarity.

Probably one to rent, not buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars DVD lets it down 4 Oct 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a fast-paced, engrossing story with great performances from the entire cast, and including fascinating exterior shooting. But, as has been noted by several reviewers, this DVD transfer is disappointing. It is not the vintage of the film, one suspects, but a problem with the production of the item - there is considerable image instability that leaves you wondering whether the thing is about to freeze at any moment.
