Product Description

This action-packed thriller ranks alongside Hitchcock's great British thrillers. When ex-spy David Somers takes a low-profile job in the country cataloguing a butterfly collection, he finds that dangerous work continues to pursue him. David grows fond of his employer s niece, a fragile, fey young woman named Sophie. When Sophie is framed for the murder of Hick - the spiteful handyman, he becomes embroiled in a murder mystery and goes underground with the beautiful suspect. The fugitives stay one step ahead of the police until the breathless climax. Starring the Oscar nominated and Emmy Award winning Trevor Howard (Gandhi, The Third Man, Superman) in one of his greatest films alongside the Oscar nominated and Emmy Award winning Jean Simmons (Spartacus, Guys and Dolls, Elmer Gantry) and directed by Ralph Thomas (Doctor in the House).

Horror of horrors! All these years spent waiting for the DVD release of this great and under-rated thriller - only to find that there is a vital and atmospheric scene missing from the Eureka transfer! That is to say, the dark and brooding opening scene where Trevor Howard, having bungled his last mission, arrives at an eerie London Aiport without any passport or papers - IS NOT THERE! You can even hear the savage cut in the soundtrack at the tail end of the title sequence which should lead in to the missing scene. Looks like I'll be returning this one and holding on to my off-air recordings a little while longer - certainly until there is a proper transfer of the complete film. So my recommendation is - do not buy this DVD! Record and enjoy the full version of Clouded Yellow when it is screened on Channel 4 (who currently hold the rights).

As other reviewers have pointed out this dvd release is missing the opening scene set in London airport. Why this scene is missing is beyond me - it was in the version shown on television. This is why I have given the dvd only 2 stars.

The actual film is excellent. I won't go into plot details and spoil your enjoyment. The film is a typical well made spy thriller - it is just a shame it has been given such a shoddy dvd release. Lets hope a special edition containing the full length film is released in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Saturday Afternoon Movie. 23 Oct 2008
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
It may be my age, but this gem could not have come at a better time of year (winter). With a rainy afternoon outside, no interruptions and my mind reset back to darker, more paranoid times, this black and white thriller delivers solid entertainment and pleasure.

My total lack of knowledge of it before watching - how have I missed it on TV? - added an extra sense of tension. I've now become a bit of a missionary, passing it on for others to enjoy.

The great cast is also worth a mention with familiar old faces popping up all the way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underated 23 Oct 2008
By Michael Jenkins VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I cannot believe that this film has hardly ever been on television, at least I have never seen it on. A friend gave me a VHS copy of this many years ago and I haven't seen it since which is almost 20 years. People keep on about it being Hitchcockian in nature which is also mentioned in the synopsis, I like to think it is immense in it's originality. The acting is superb not just the main players but also the supporting cast, Richard Wattis pops up and shows what a versatile actor he was and didn't just play bumbling fools in sitcoms.

I don't know if this film has been restored but the quality for a 57 year old film is superb. Overall a very enjoyable movie with creeping malevolence throughout which is just kept under the surface. Reminds me a bit of an earlier version of Patrick McGoohans the Prisoner.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Golden Oldie From 1950s British Cinema 20 Oct 2008
By E. A. Redfearn TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I rather enjoyed this little known thriller dating from 1951, made in the Hitchcock mode. Produced by Betty Box and directed by Ralph Thomas; Trevor Howard(Brief Encounter) plays David Somers who has lost his job in the Secret Service and has taken a dull position cataloguing butterflies for an employer in the Hampshire countryside.

Falling for his employer's niece, Sophie, played by Jean Simmons (Great Expectations, Spartacus etc) he becomes entangled in a murder mystery when a local handyman Hick, played by Maxwell Reed (The Square Ring) is found dead with a knife in his back. Suspicion falls on Sophie who is suffering from memory loss and cannot recall all her movements from the previous day. In order to help Sophie solve the mystery, both David and her go on the run from the police and the Secret Service with one of his old colleagues played by Kenneth More (Reach For The Sky, Genevieve) pursuing them across Newcastle Upon Tyne and the Lakes District, until the exciting climax taking place in Liverpool Docks.

Although dated in places, it is still an exciting film to watch. Mature adults will welcome a look at Newcastle Upon Tyne and Liverpool as they used to look during the post war years and am sure will bring back memories.

One of the things I like about this film though is that there are so many character actors making appearances, albeit briefly. Andre Morell, Marianne Stone, Geoffrey Keen, and even Dandy Nichols popping up in one scene. Look out also for the lovely Sandra Dorne who plays a daughter of a friend who helps them to escape from Newcastle.

Picture quality is rather good with clean, crisp detail, although sound is mono and is quite adequate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thriller Grips 20 Oct 2008
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This 1951 release stars 5 big names of the film and theatre world, Trevor Howard (brilliant in Brief Encounter a few years before); Maxwell Reed (then up and coming heart throb); beautiful Jean Simmons; stylish Sonia Dresdel and Barry Jones (Seven Days to Noon). Produced by Betty Box and directed by Ralph Thomas this was a first feature and scored well with critics of the day. The bonus of excellent photography by Geoffrey Unsworth and some distinctive locations bring the story to life.
Amongst the co-stars you will see a young Kenneth More, the ever reliable Andre Morell and Geoffrey Keen much later to appear in the Bond films. A lady who may well hold the record for appearing in more films than anyone else is also here, none other than Marianne Stone. It's a who's who of the era and a delight to watch and follow and as the film progresses it grips. All in all an excellent thriller.
The picture quality is excellent and the sound crisp but I would have liked it a little louder at times.

3.0 out of 5 stars THE CLOUDED YELLOW
Is a butterfly. This film is very dated, unfortunately, and you have to make allowances, because it is an interesting and innocent story line and has a charm of its own.
