Product Description

Christmas approaches. A killer dressed as a clown haunts the streets of Manchester. For him the City's miraculous regeneration had unacceptable consequences. This is the reckoning. DCI Tom Caton enlists the help of forensic profiler Kate Webb, placing her in mortal danger. The trail leads from the site of the old mass cholera graves, through Moss Side, the Gay Village, the penthouse opulence of canalside apartment blocks, and the bustling Christmas Market, to the Victorian Gothic grandeur of the Town Hall. Time is running out. For Tom, for Kate...and for the City.

The cover might not give too much away, but this is a solid first novel from a new crime author. If you're familiar with the TV detective mysteries Prime Suspect and Cracker, you'll be at home on the streets of Manchester as the charismatic detective and forensic specialist follow the trail of a masked and inventive serial killer.

Although the last act comes very late into the book (20-odd pages from the end and they still don't know whodunit) and wraps up quickly, protagonist Tom Caton is a well-drawn sympathetic leading man and is surely good for a few more adventures.

Since the book is of the publish-on-demand kind you may need to overlook distractions from occasional typos in the text, but all in all The Cleansing is a fitting addition to the police procedural genre, and Bill Rogers is a new author worthy of our support.

Needs an editor 18 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm afraid an in depth knowledge of Mancunian highways and byways is not a substitute for good writing. Was this book ever edited by someone who read it all? The eye colour of one character changes from 'world weary blue grey' to 'rich brown' in the space of one page. The name of Joanne's partner changes from Abbie to Karen, just before their civil partnership is due to take place.
The endless procedural padding makes a comparatively short story into a lengthy tedium.

The Cleansing 11 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
From the very first page, the author's great knowledge of Manchester is used as a backdrop to an almost bizarre murder enquiry. Tom Caton is most believable as a DCI, in fact he comes across as normal and professional, this unique approach is quite refreshing. The team are introduced and built upon and with Bill Rodgers understanding of police procedure make this an exciting read.

An excellant detective novel with the added attraction of being set in a city I know quite well, well drawn characters and a just about plausable plot. Read more

not bad but could easily be improved with a bit of work
The main character was a refreshing change from the hard bitten, womanising, drunken maverick we usually get in crime novels but I agree with the reviewer who said he was a bit too... Read more

Bit of a missed opportunity
I think the author has missed an opportunity to turn an average book into an excellent read. The characterisations are fairly good, and the police procedures convincing, however... Read more

I thoroughly enjoyed this crime thriller and have just purchased the second in this series. The only downside is the number of editorial errors.
