Forget groups like Sha na na,rocky sharpe, darts and metrotones. If its authentic sounding vocal group sounds of the late 50s and early 60s mainly practised by groups like Dion and the Belmonts,The Mystics ,Passions and The Elegants to name but a few then The Roomates are what its all about, for nearly 20 years they have been together this their 3rd album released on Ace records perfectly captures the sound of the great laurie label artists whom the group are obviously fans of,Much of the album is self penned, from the great take on the Mystics "Hushabye" The roomates own "Twinkle lullabye" is superd doowop to the great "No one really knows" a stunning a cappella version of "Smoke gets in your eyes" and an even better uptempo doowop song is created from Elvis "Cant help falling in love".
The opening song reminds me of The Earls "Remember then" but The Roomates "On a night like this"is every bit as good.
Every song on the album could have been recorded back in the late 50s and early 60s but all have that great Roomates sound to them.Maybe at last this album will give The Roomates the recognition that they deserve, for far too long in the UK doowop fans have been served up the tripe of stuff by groups mentioned in the opening sentence of this review,so forget that lot and do yourselves a favour purchase this cd and listen to how it should be done
