Product Description

The Roomates come from England... via Philadelphia and New York and it took "40" years for them to get there. Formed in the mid 1980s, a quintet of young British rock‘n’roll fans broke away from their contemporaries, (busy embracing rockabilly as the latest wave of American music culture hit the UK), to form a group who set out to prove there was more to music than slap bass clicks and rim shots. Three of those original idealists are singing on this very album - in the shape of Nick Kennedy and brothers Mark and Steve Webb who celebrate 18 years together with the release of this album. The fourth Roomate, "the new boy" Glenn Bretnall joined the line up in 1990 giving us the classic Roomates who’ve been in perfect harmony for the past 14 years. Their heroes today are the Elegants, the Skyliners, the Duprees, the Mystics and the Passions to name just a handful of groups and you’ll here them echoed in many of the songs here... but the Roomates write and perform their own material most of the time... only covering only songs which they feel they could do proper justice to. A prime example is ‘Skyline Of Manhattan’ - a stunning and beautiful ballad that most of us would never have heard of until now. If you’re like me, you’ll be pretty grateful they did. You most certainly are not listening to gang of wannabe impersonators here - the Roomates most definitely are the real thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars real vocal group sounds from england 31 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Forget groups like Sha na na,rocky sharpe, darts and metrotones. If its authentic sounding vocal group sounds of the late 50s and early 60s mainly practised by groups like Dion and the Belmonts,The Mystics ,Passions and The Elegants to name but a few then The Roomates are what its all about, for nearly 20 years they have been together this their 3rd album released on Ace records perfectly captures the sound of the great laurie label artists whom the group are obviously fans of,Much of the album is self penned, from the great take on the Mystics "Hushabye" The roomates own "Twinkle lullabye" is superd doowop to the great "No one really knows" a stunning a cappella version of "Smoke gets in your eyes" and an even better uptempo doowop song is created from Elvis "Cant help falling in love".
The opening song reminds me of The Earls "Remember then" but The Roomates "On a night like this"is every bit as good.
Every song on the album could have been recorded back in the late 50s and early 60s but all have that great Roomates sound to them.Maybe at last this album will give The Roomates the recognition that they deserve, for far too long in the UK doowop fans have been served up the tripe of stuff by groups mentioned in the opening sentence of this review,so forget that lot and do yourselves a favour purchase this cd and listen to how it should be done

By irene brodsky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I remember Cathy Jean & The Roomates and what a lovely song that they had ......"Please Love me
Forever". I especially like the Roomates version of There's a Moon Out Tonite and Oh! Rosemarie.
I think they are to be greatly admired for being together so many years. Surely, they must be nice guys.
