5.0 out of 5 stars Play Fur Elise by the end of this book 5 April 2008
Format:Paperback
Well paced piano tuition for the adult wishing to play the classical masters. The book jumps pretty well into reading music and builds associations with hand position and fingering. The tunes are interesting right from the start and teachers can play accompaniments to add further interest. Spot the 'familiar' tune as your progress through the book which all helps with your learning.

If going through the book on your own without a teacher be sure to review previous pages. There is constant referral to previous points made sometimes without revision hints. However introduction to new concepts are gently woven around enjoyable pieces (the flats & sharps lesson uses well known pieces).

If your teacher is a classical purist they may try to steer you away from the simplification of some of the pieces. Take this in good spirit, because from the pupil's point of view it brings the classical world a lot closer and more immediate.

The author Carol Barratt is one of the editors for 'Tunes You've Always Wanted to Play.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 14 May 2009
By Karen
Format:Paperback
My piano teacher went with me to pick my first piano book, and this is what we found. I think its brilliant, you start right at the beginning playing easy little tunes, and it is challenging, but only after it's built up your confidence with nice easy pieces you can recognise.

I found it wonderful that after only an hour I, an absolute dunce on the piano, could play 'Ode to Joy'! I'll definitely be getting her other books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars clear and enjoyable course for adult beginners 26 May 2011
By Fiona
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after reluctantly returning my library copy!
The teaching style is clear and straightforward. As a complete beginner I have enjoyed being able to play small (simplified) extracts from Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn and other classical composers right from the start.
One minor negative for me is that this copy uses American terminology (eg 'measure' for bar; 'whole note', 'half note' etc.).

3.0 out of 5 stars But it's too small..... 18 Sept. 2011
Format:Paperback
A fine body of work and just the thing for a budding pianist - but the book is only paperback size and this makes it hard to use at the keyboard. The inclusion of a CD with the pieces being played would also have helped the philistines like me who did'nt recognise many of the classical works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Back to basics 4 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A friend wants me to help him learn the piano, but I discovered that after playing for 50 + years I had forgtten most of the rules and broken all the others, so this book is re-teaching me how it should be done as well as helping him. All you need to get you started are three things, this book, practice and patience. Very good value for money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not at all useful for a complete beginner 9 Oct. 2013
By Jonel
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Maybe it's just me but as a complete beginner I have found it impossible to understand. I can only assume other reviewers had some prior knowledge of the piano or other instruments, as for a total beginner who's never touched a piano and can't read music at all, it's not at all user friendly. I got far more out of following videos online. Maybe I'll come back to it when I've got a bit more knowledge, but so far, definitely not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for adult beginners 12 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The Classic Piano Course provides a good selection of well-known and less well-known pieces for the adult beginner. There is plenty of reading in this series which can easily be done at home in between lessons. Am excellent series.

I am a private flute/piano teacher and this is the best book for beginners by far, I even use it for some of my younger pupils as well as adults. Be careful when purchasing this particular copy, I didn't realise I had bought the American version on behalf of my pupil, so crotchets, minims etc are referred to as quarter notes, half notes, etc.
