When combining pop, metal, rock, folk, and progressive rock, your song writing better be damn good or what you end up with is a cluttered mess! On their previous release Wintercoast, Touchstone delivered awesome song writing. "The City Sleeps" takes the song writing up another level and approaches perfection. Many of the songs effortlessly go through all of the above mentioned styles. The resulting mix is enthralling. "The City Sleeps" is yet another excellent offering from Touchstone. As always, the playing is very acomplished, the production top notch, the harmonies joyful, and Kim's singing outstanding. In some ways it is very much a case of more of the same and in others this is quite a different CD. It has a more commercial, and dare I say it, mainstream feel to it that should make it appealing to a larger audience. If you are put off by the "progressive" tag but like intelligent song-oriented rock then check this CD out. There is some great use of acoustic guitar which adds a new dimension to the "Touchstone sound" and results in some very commercial sounding songs. There are still a couple of progressive epics, "The City Sleeps " and "When Shadows Fall" to be enjoyed and these are both excellent tracks which remind at times of FROST. My favourite track so far is "Horizons" which begins as a very good mainstream "pop" song, has some heavy guitar riffing, great vocals, and a fantastic "progy" musical ending featuring great keyboards and guitar. It is too early to say yet, but this could well be my favourite Touchstone album to date.
