'The Legend of Huma,' 'Kaz the Minotaur,' and 'Land of the Minotaurs' have surely placed Richard Knaak firmly among the best authors to grace the Dragonlance world. With his trademark gripping stories and stunning characterization, he is one of the few authors of the setting who understands its tone.
Needless to say, 'The Citadel' falls in line with the standards set by his previous works. The main character of the story is Tyros, a Red Robed mage with an obssession about the flying citadels used during the War of the Lance. So when his home city of Gwynned is attacked by one, he turns his attention to tracking it. His quest brings him into contact with Serene, cleric of the woodland god Branchala, who has lost her love to the master of the citadel. And, of course, there's a kender, with some highly unusual travelling companions...
Tyros' ordeals reveal the ugliness of evil and the value of human life. But he finds his own life in peril he discovers the dark secret of the citadel's mysterious power...
All in all, an excellent novel. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because 'Legend of Huma' still outshines Knaaks other works in Krynn.
