About the Author

A. J. Cronin was born in Scotland in 1896. In 1914 he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Glasgow University, but his studies were interrupted by war service as a surgeon sub-lieutenant in the Navy. He graduated in 1919, and was later appointed Medical Inspector of Mines. He practised medicine in London until ill-health made him return to literature, and he wrote many hugely successful novels, including the famous Dr Finlay series. He was married with three sons, and died in 1981.

An excellent book which though written in the 1930s seems an accurate portrayal of medicine today. The book, like its American counterpart Arrowsmith, deals with the commercialisation of medicine and how one young idealist gradually becomes corrupted. Whilst admittedly the characterisation of female characters is somewhat shallow the plot is incredibly engaging as are the lessons about poverty and ill-heallth and medicine and money. Should be made required reading for any doctor or patient.

It has been some time since I have read this book but is still sticks in my memory and must be one of my favourite titles. I can honestly say it's is the first book ever to reduce me to tears which has to be down to the Authors skill. As a highly stressed Analyst I always tend to choose uncomplicated easy to read novels and this one fitted the bill perpectly, without being boring and uninteresting. Set in the early part of the last century, the book tells the story of a young doctor who losses his principals along the way and finds out the hard way how not to succeed. Coming from a mining background, albeit Scotland, I felt I could relate to some of the issues in the early part of the story. Tinged with a bit of medical history it charts the lives of two main characters. Although essentially a love story the book does not have the usual slushy ending you would expect, but I won't go into that.

I read Cronin's The Citadel as part of a source review for university and really enjoyed Cronins portrayal of a young Scottish doctor trying to develop his medical career in Wales. I really enjoyed this book not only for entertainment value but it highlights the developments in medicine in the early twentieth century and the doctors attitudes to the use of new techniques. The book also discusses the way in which doctors climbed the medical career ladder by starting off as an assistant, establishing their own register of private patients and establishing their own surgery. Cronin also discusses the character's position in a voluntary hospital which was common for doctors at this time to gain status and prestige for their work and also the much desired success of establishing themselves in London especially in the Harley Street area. It is interesting to note that the author is also responsible for the television series Dr Finlays casebook and is useful for anyone studying the History of Medicine as I am.
