From Amazon.co.uk

This Alan Seymour dramatisation of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was originally broadcast as a BBC series in 1988. Whether you take CS Lewis' unsubtle Christian symbolism on board or not, the fact remains that the cycle of Narnia novels, of which this was the first, are among the best children's fantasy stories of all time. For anyone who spent their formative years on Mars, the story concerns four children who find their way into a magical land benevolently ruled by the mystical lion, Aslan (voiced by Ronald Pickup, no less). Aslan has been deposed by the evil White Witch (played wonderfully by a screechingly camp Barbara Kellerman) who has cast all of Narnia into perpetual winter and whose eventual defeat entails a fearful sacrifice. While the special effects are firmly of the Doctor Who school, Lewis' writing is expertly transferred to the small screen and there are robust but credible performances from the four highly plausible young thesps cast in the leading roles. It's perfect for cosy family (early) evening viewing, and something that young viewers will return to again and again. --Roger Thomas

As a child I adored the chronicles of Narnia. I literally read the ink off the pages. Imagine my pure delieght at this most glorious interpretation. The coziness of tea with Mr.Tumnus,
the horror of the White Witch, the splendour of Aslan, Father Christmas finally arriving in the beautiful land of Narnia. Yes, indeed it was all as I had imagined.
This film is an absolute must for parents who wish to keep the magic alive in childrens imaginations. Watch it on a pre-christmas evening huddled around the fire drinking hot Chocolate.
I dare you not to enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply magical! 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
The Lion the witch and the wardrobe begins an incredible series of adventures from the magical lands of Narnia. The BBC have easily made a television classic here, with outstanding sets, costumes and acting of the highest quality. Barbara Kellerman is brilliant as The White Witch and if you think her performance is outstanding, buy the 4th video in the series and witness Tom Baker's incredible perfromance as Puddleglum. Buy all 4 of the videos, it is worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic adaptation of a wonderful story 6 Nov 2000
Format:VHS Tape
This production ia a classic and heart warming tale of three children who enter the world of narnia. Whats makes the production so good is the set and the presense of the characters. I first saw it when i was nine years old and recently re watched it and it still has not lost its magic

. a brilliant piece of direction and production

5.0 out of 5 stars True to the book
An excellent adaptation - well-acted and very true to the book in tone, atmosphere and dialogue. It has aged well and it is FAR superior to the dreadful 2005 film version. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated but still good for younger children.
Only consider if you havent seen the later version. This is after all a 1980's made for TV version. Having said that, the performances are still pretty good and perhaps less scary. Read more
