Beautiful and handy Christmas tips book

From the Publisher

Did you know an original 12th-century mince pie could weigh up to 100kg? And were you aware that kissing under the mistletoe derives from a Norse myth, thousands of years older than Christianity itself? Perhaps you have always wondered why we celebrate Christmas when we do? If so, The Christmas Pocket Bible is for you.

For many of us, Christmas is an annual holiday of overconsumption, family tension and frantic last-minute shopping that we have come to take for granted. In some 800million family homes around the world, Christmas has become an annual celebration that crosses cultures and religions.

It is one of the oldest holidays mankind has and a multi-billion pound global industry has grown up around servicing our annual Christmas needs. Yet every year we go through the same routines and customs of overeating, dressing the tree and hanging out our stockings on Christmas Eve without ever wondering `Why?' Is it possible that somewhere along the line the true meanings behind our modern Christmas traditions have been lost in a flurry of wrapping paper and cracker hats?

This book is intended to redress that balance. Packed with facts, trivia, recipes and helpful advice, The Christmas Pocket Bible contains everything you need to know to become a Christmas expert. From making your own Christmas pudding to throwing the perfect festive bash, we hope that in these pages you will find the answers to all your Christmas queries, plus a feast of helpful tips guaranteed to put the pop into your Yuletide popularity.

You will also find here the real stories that go to make up our modern Christmas traditions, from the ancient Roman feast of Saturnalia to the invention of our very own Santa Claus, while all the time never forgetting the birth of one Jesus Christ, of course.

Untangling the myths, legends and dogma that go to make up this most ancient of feasts, we have tried here to put Christmas into both a historical and traditional context, while at the same time remaining faithful to the true reason for the season.

We hope that the result is a useful and comprehensive reference guide to all things Christmas and that this book will become as much a part of your annual holidays as cold turkey sandwiches and mince pies. Merry Christmas one and all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew you needed a book on Christmas? 24 Nov 2009
By Mrs. R.
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What a brilliant little book. It's much more interesing that I expected; in fact, I'm not sure what I expected of a book on Christmas. I ordered it because I write for a company that makes special products for Christmas, and I've been doing a bit of research into the mythology, folklore and history. It's been far more difficult than I'd imagined. This delightful guide extends much further back than whole official Christmas thing - you know, the birth of Jesus and all that - with Norse Yule, Roman Saturnalia and the church's decision on which date to choose for Christ's official birthday. (It's a bit like the Queen's.) If you were brought up believing that Jesus was really born on 25th December, then wondered how Christmas trees, Santa Claus, stockings, reindeer and turkeys fitted into the mix, here you have all the answers. Great for atheists, agnostics, Christmas loves and Scrooges alike.

If you are like me and love Xmas, this book is a great little companion that is jam-packed with every aspect that makes up the festive season including recipes, history, carols, toys, songs, films etc etc. Really nice concise sections that highlight the key facts without waffle. I have high hopes for some of the other pocket bibles after reading the Xmas edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas all wrapped up 14 Nov 2009
This little book is pocket sized, but the cover is stylishly simple and wouldn't look out of place on the coffee table.
Inside, there are hints and tips on creating a perfect traditional Christmas without spending a fortune.
I particularly enjoyed the sections on making your own gifts and decorations, the party games and the Christmas lunch recipes (I certainly will be trying the nut roast this year!)
The book also contains the words to eleven traditional carols and is the ideal size for taking on any carol singing sessions!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute little festive reference guide 18 Dec 2009
By Gemmeg
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
A lovely looking little book. It has lots of information about the festive season, as well as history, traditions, recipes etc. Very handy to have around, and will give you some good ideas if you're looking for a traditional christmas. It even has a section on christmas carols, so if you fancy doing a bit of carol singing round the fire, at least now you'll be singing the right words!!

4.0 out of 5 stars I like bits of it... 17 Dec 2009
By Josh W
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The book is interesting and readable peppered with lots of bite sized facts about all aspects of Christmas - past and present - but it tries to be too many things and some sections disappointed me as they were somewhat boring; sections sounded promising but were surprisingly theological and intellectual in parts for what I expected to be a light hearted book. The book also covers Mince Pie Recipes, and How to Cook a Roast Dinner for example. The book succeeded in making me feel Christmassy though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deck the Halls... 17 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Christmas Pocket Bible is the perfect little book for lovers of the festive season. It's packed full of interesting information and there are innumerable snippets of trivia which you can use to bore everyone around the dinner table! The most interesting sections are the ones that explain the history or myths that surround Christmas like the origins of Father Christmas, the 1st Christmas cards, the origins of the Yule log, wassailing and carols and why we hang out stockings. There are also lyrics to some popular Christmas carols (so handy to take with you if you happen to be going caroling)and recipes for Christmas pudding and mince pies (amongst other things). There are jokes and trivia, family games, tips for gifts and preparation ideas for the day.
For such a little book (only 165 pages) it's crammed full of festive fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars an excellent conversation starter 17 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
imagine the scene - stuck at a christmas party and needing to keep the conversation going until the disco starts and you can make your excuses and leave. Ladies and gentlemen - a book that's like a revision guide to christmas - did the three wise men really come from trafalgar square? is christmas a celebration that the x-factor has finished, who was the christmas number one in 1989... In short, great book, useful info about christmas and won't leave a huge dent in your wallet. Use it as a reference guide to get you through this time of year - v.nice
