I picked up this book mostly because of a wave of nostalgia from my American upbringing which hit me as I scanned the title. Those of you in the UK might not quite understand the significance of the christmas cooking in the USA. However, this really doesn't have a bearing on whether you will enjoy the book or not.
Mostly what I thought as I read this book was that it was a good idea but poorly executed:
I thought the overall idea was a good one - the cookie club is a good backdrop for the action, no question. I also really liked the mini-chapters about the history of common baking ingredients; in fact, this along with the recipes is probably what made me give the book 2 stars.
However...I hate to say it but...the writing is TERRIBLE. Where on earth was this author's editor? There are too many characters and they are so under-developed you never feel you really get to know any of them. There are no surprises, and to be honest, where I was anticipating a glitzy cookie-studded christmas fest of fun, laughter, with perhaps a bit of emotion, the entire story pretty much left me cold. I guess I just felt that not enough effort was put into the story. What could have been something great along the lines of "How to make an American Quilt" was, in fact, just another paperback I won't bother to pick up again.
