Fan's of Dick Bruna's illustrations should get into the festive spirit and indulge in this book. The unlikely shaped book is full of his fabulous and deceptively simple illustrations, yet there is a very different feel to it than the Miffy titles. The drawings are bold as ever but there is non of the warm reds and royal blues of Miffy, instead we are treated to sweet angels in minty colours and everywhere the land is yellow. I've also never seen Mary and Joseph looking quite so happy about the arrival of their newborn.
On the minus side, the pop out nativity is very cute but also small and fiddly. I wish the text was rhyming as in the Miffy books and it would definately be enhanced by a hard cover.

I have loved the book since I first owned a copy at the age of 5. This is a uncomplicated version of the Christmas story for young children to enjoy. The illustrations are beautifully simple that I haven't met a child yet who didn't love them, and I've shared it with many each year in school!

Dick Bruna's spare text and simple figures -- on which the famous Fisher-Price little people could have been based -- tell the story of Jesus' birth is an abbreviated, effective way that preschoolers will enjoy. Grammavona

This must be the 6th copy of this book that I have bought. In the early 1970s I bought it for my daughter and then it was later enjoyed by my son. I've bought it for godchildren and now for my first grandchild. I used it each Christmas in the classroom when I taught and created classroom murals based on the book.
It is so simple and the illustrations do not date. Two years ago I bought my own copy and still read it each December. Dick Bruna is my favourite children's illustrator and The Christmas Book is my favourite of his books.
