Product Description

'We're all pilgrims,' he said thoughtfully. 'One way or another, aren't we? Always searching for something.'

As Christmas approaches, everything seems to be falling into place for Dossie. Her son Clem and his adorable five-year-old son Jakey have moved to Cornwall to be closer to her. She runs her own successful catering business. All she needs now is for the run of bad luck in her romantic life to end.

Forming a slightly unconventional family setup with Dossie are the jovial nuns of the local convent and the wonderfully eccentric Janna - a warm-hearted, generous woman who looks after little Jakey when she's not helping at the nunnery. With humour, kindness and a deep need of somewhere to belong, they form a tight bond.

But the sisters' life as they know it is at risk when an avaricious property developer starts prowling around their Grade I listed building. Will this close-knit unit who so depend on each other still be together next Christmas? And what will they have learnt about the true meaning of family?

From the Inside Flap

'We're all pilgrims,' he said thoughtfully, 'one way or another, aren't we? Always searching for something.'

Twelfth night - time to put away the Christmas angel. A new year is dawning and everything seems to be falling into place for Dossie. Her son Clem and his adorable five-year-old son Jakey have moved to Cornwall to be closer to her. She runs a successful catering business. All she needs now is some better luck in her romantic life.

Complementing Dossie's rather unconventional family set-up is the wonderfully eccentric Janna: a warm-hearted, generous woman who looks after the quirky nuns of the local convent - and little Jakey. With humour, kindness and the support of friendship, they form a tight bond.

But the Sisters' life as they know it is thrown into doubt when an avaricious property developer starts prowling around their beautiful, historic home. Will this close-knit unit who so depend on each other still be together next Christmas? And what will they have learnt about the true meaning of family, and about having somewhere you really belong?

This charming book captures from the opening page, and gently ushers the reader through a myriad of emotions. Throughout the story there is an overwhelming theme of family, and the stability that comes from being loved and needed is expertly explored. The characterisation is excellent, not only is Jakey adorable, but also the supporting cast of nuns, family members and assorted dogs add a special richness to the story. The wild Cornish beauty is beautifully illustrated, and as with all Marcia Willett's novels, the landscape forms an important part of the narrative. Overall, there is a quiet gentleness to this story which belies its strength, and it is indicative of Marcia Willett's skill as a writer, that such a delightfully warm story captivates without becoming overly sentimental.
On a personal level I enjoyed this story; it is very easy to read, and as its title suggests would make a perfect seasonal read.

What a let-down! 24 Dec 2011

Format:Hardcover
Marcia Willett has always been one of my favorite authors because of her ability to involve readers closely in the story she is telling, and the surroundings in which the story is placed. This time her focus is much more difuse and seems really overconcerned with religious matters which overwhelm the human interactiuons. A big disappointment!

Too fey by far 11 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Marcia's books are always about a certain milieu, what a generation or three ago might be referred to as "silver fork society." The inhabitants of her world give silver vases as presents, they line up pretty pots of cyclamen on window sills and words such as 'Primark' and 'Lidl' are notable by their absence. In other words, just as in sci-fi or time slip novels, you have to suspend reality even though her books are set in the 21st century in the very real county (sorry, Duchy) of Cornwall or Devon. Her people always have odd names, they have even more oddly-named dogs, and there are, of course, the difficult relationships.

I can usually overlook the odd names and the improbable story lines, because Marcia's books supply a certain feel-good factor - lovely old country houses, delicious meals, walks with dogs, sunrises, sunsets, and (usually) all problems are resolved and the characters usually live happily ever after - or that is the impression given. But this time there were far too many relationships leading nowhere, and the descriptions of the countryside, once the mainstay of Marcia's books, became just too saccharine. And the story itself - was it about "Auntie" Gabriel, the Christmas angel, Clem (a young widower) and his sugary-sweet son Jakey (who, no doubt in an attempt to make him sound cute, could not pronounce his Rs)? Or about Mo and Pa (some of the odd names) in their large country house and their widowed daughter, Dossie (ditto) and nasty-piece-of-work son, Adam? Or about reclusive Janna and her troubled past? Or Rupert and his wife Kitty? Or about the elderly nuns in the convent-under-threat? I really have no idea. Indeed, none of the characters interested me sufficiently even for me to want to give them a good slap and tell them to get a life! As for the semi-religious theme, that was all just a little too fey. Why wasn't the nun obviously suffering from senility seen by anyone of the medical profession, for heaven's sake (pardon the pun!) Well, I did say you had to suspend reality!

Inside this book there was a good book attempting to escape. I'm sorry to say that sadly, it's not quite managed it.

Given for Christmas, as requested. Thoroughly enjoyed and was finished in no time. This person reads an awful lot and quickly and has favourite authors. This fitted the bill.
