These tales are very popular with our emotionally sensitive 5.5yr old son. Some stories are more imaginative, others simply portray situations familiar to most children (eg a play date where a child has a tantrum on having to go home) and some themes definitely repeat themselves. However, they do reflect a world in which selfish, bad behaviour is ultimately punished and those who seek the right path, or are victims of injustice, triumph. eg Little Billy is kind to Trit-Trot the pony and feeds him carrots. With him, he has 3.5wks of pocket money saved up to buy his mother a birthday present. Along comes bully Harry and steals it from him. The pony escapes from the field, turfs Harry into a mud patch and with his teeth, hauls Harry back to Billy. Harry promptly hands back the money and runs off 'with his tail between his legs'.

This view of the world is very reassuring and satisfying for a small child. The stories are of perfect length for a bedtime read, from 6 pages to 20 pages. Our son does not listen to many stories, as he is rather more inclined towards facts, but these capture him completely.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for bedtime stories 26 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Have been reading these to my 6 year old as bed time stories, and they fit the bill perfectly. On average about 9 or 10 pages long and nice little stories. Not as good as some of the Enid Blyton stuff, hence the reason for 4 stars and not 5, but my little girl is still enjoying them. Stories centre around talking gnomes, fairies etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic 14 Jun 2014

I love this book. I bought it as a bedtime book for my 6 year old son. There are 60 stories which are a perfect length for bedtime. I love how the stories have morals without preaching. In one story , a boy who thinks it's funny to pull animal tails finds out just how sore it is when he is punished with growing a tail of his own so the animals can give him a taste of his own medicine, likewise the story of the boy who likes to nip other children , he learns a lesson when he is pinched by crabs and lobsters. My favourite story involves an old lady who takes in 3 animals who are turfed out by their uncaring owners. They repay her kindness by defending her from a group of burglars who they overheard were planning to rob the old lady as she slept. Wonderful book to read to children

A Nice omnibus for children. Some of the stories are a bit short, and its a bit old fashioned. Typical Enid Blyton.
