Worth the wait?? 21 Nov 2002

Over the last 12mths MOS have blasted us with various titles, alas most have been all too commercial and similar in content. This goes back to what we really want. Something different to make you want to listen again and again. CD1 opens with a great chilled down mix of DJ Sammy's Heaven. The standard continues throughout the first disc and some great tracks stand out such as 7, 12, and 19. Disc 2 is not quite as strong and leaves you a little dissapointed to start with but it does grow after a couple of plays. Overall worth having in the collection and many a good winter night will be had with this in the background.

Initially I was so disappointed by this album that I shelved it, until I read a review on this page that inspired me to have another go. I'm glad I did.

CD2 is a brilliant and confident mix with some cracking basslines - Floppy Sounds and Greed being its standout tracks. It's slightly more uptempo than I'd expected, but with not one duff track it's hard to stay disappointed. It's slightly inaccessable but definitely worth the battle.

CD1 has a few great tracks but there's some pretty uninspiring ones too, which makes me want to flick through them. As I prefer to listen to these sorts of albums right the way through, this left me a bit cold. There's also a lot of tracks here that have appeared on other Ministry albums in various guises.

It depends what you like - I don't like the more poppy type of chillout so maybe that's why I found such a discrepany between the two discs' appeal. However, if you've liked the previous Chillout Sessions you'll like this offering too - eventually! Try not to be put off by the doublers, CD2 is classic MOS chillout at its best and worth the purchase alone.

The first track, a dreamy ballad version of DJ Sammy & Yanou's "Heaven", gave me high hopes of a truly great classic chillout compilation, but the title "chillout" is a misnomer. Which isn't to say that there are some interesting tracks on the cds, but it did not meet my expectations of "chill" of the old-school, ambient, dream type. This is a lounge music, pure & simple, of Buddha Bar/Dimitri From Paris genre. Garage tracks like "Starry Eyed Surprise" [HEY DJ!!!] or the jazzy "Don't Stop" and "Distractions" are not what I was expecting from a "chill" compilation. So if you're looking for appropriate lounge/cocktail music, here's your cd.. If you're looking for a nice compiliation to take your mind off the rat race.. well..maybe it's time to pull out the the old Jean Michel Jarre works.
